My daughter is 5 years old and was complaining about her vulva itching, so I took a look and noticed that there was this dark red patch in between her outer labia and inner labia. She says that that isn't what was itching, and she had no complaints of pain either, I was doing research on online and cannot find anything similar? Can anyone tell me if they've experience somehting similar with themselves or thier children? I'm planning on making a Dr appointment in the morning, but this is bothering me now. Please let me know.

  • I'm sorry your daughter is going through this. I will try to word my response very carefully-- I am not accusing anyone of anything. Many times a girl of 5 can get urinary tract infections or yeast infections that can cause itching. These should be ruled out. If she has been scratching the area, it's not unusual to have a red mark there. The skin down there is thin and fragile. However, both you and your daughter state that the area with the red mark is not the area that was itching. Where is the itching area? Now, here's the hard thing to say........sometimes a child of that age's first symptom of sexual abuse is itching or an 'unusual feeling' down there. It is possible for a child to receive an STD like HPV, which would cause a red 'bump'. Please don't be surprised if your docs think something like this and wish to rule it out. Again, I'm not accusing anyone of anything-- I just thought it should be mentioned. I hope that's not the case. Please let us know what your doc says. And remember, I'm not a doc. I though you could use a reply-- you must be very worried. I wish the best for both you and your daughter!

  • Thanks for your response, I took my daughter to the Dr. today and said the itching is most likely due to bubble baths (she loves them) and she could just be sensitive to the type we used. The redness he said looked like a bruise, he thinks that she probably fell somehow onto her crotch because she doesn't behave like a child who's been molested or hurt. Thank you for your concern, I appreciate it.
