Hi,
Basically I had a haircut in a really unhygenic barbers about 6 weeks ago. Once the haircut had finished I'd noticed I had loads of cuts on my scalp. I also suffer from acne, and the barber had burst one of my zits which was bleeding after the haircut. I didn't think much of it then, but I wasn't sure if his equipment was sterilized. Now 6 weeks later I have the flu, and I know that is a sign of initial HIV infection. I am really worried, I have just had a HIV test I get the results in 2 weeks. WHat are my risks?? Could I have HIV?

Thanks

a worried teenager

  • personally i think its highly unlikely, but you have done the right thing in getting a test done, unfortunatly its just a waiting game now,all you can do is sit tight and try!!!not to worry too much.it is a possibilty but a very small one.regards to the flu, where do u live as at this time of year its very common,so i wouldnt associate the two together.my thoughts are with you,let us now how you get on.god bless and take care.

  • Hi worried teenager,I am a hairstylist. First of all if you got cuts like you say on your scalp and this place isn't that clean, I would contact the state board of cosmetology. Hiv is caught from fluid to fluid. Basically if barber cut your scalp, he would have to have an open cut on him and those two cuts would have to have some contact together for a period of time. To the point where his blood could go into your system and yours into his. This is very UNLIKELY! I have been i the business for 17 years and have NEVER heard of any stories like this. Even when I was doing nails, it was easy for a customer to get a cut while nipping their cuticles. BUT, I would have to have a cut as well and make the cut to cut contact. I just do not think it is a concern for you. What I am concerned about is the shop where you had your hair cut. Was this a new barber? Did he offer an apology to your scalp being cut? I would either call or have a parent call this place and explain how you were "cut" . If they are unresponsive, then please contact the state board. I am very professional and my clients are very important to me. There are too many barbers/hairdressers out there getting away with too much. Thanks and I hope this helps you in some way. Take care

  • Hi, thanks so much for your responses. Well I live in the UK. Thinking back on it the barber's did not appear very hygenic, my father recently had a haircut there and commented on this. I am not sure if the barber sterilized his equipment. I heard there is a higher chance of Hep C virus transmission. I have researched the internet and not found any documented cases of barbers spreading these diseases....so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed....thanks again guys tc.

  • Check out thebody.com there's a lot of good advice there. Get yourself tested after 3 months, too (I believe that's coming up soon). Rory

RoryYou will be fine.... there are times where I believe hiv virus lives for several minutes on a comb or scissors but Hep C lives for 28 days. I would worry more about Hep C rather than HIv..We all have skeletons in our closets, but for most of us works out. I am sure you will be fine.
