From Severe Menstrual Cramps to NO Menstrual Cramps?

I am 34 years old. By way of history, I had a tubal ligation when I was 18. I have never been on the pill or any other birth control. I have regular periods, like clockwork, and they generally last 4 days.

I typically get lower back pain and diarrhea about 24-48 hours before it starts... over the past several years I have had severe cramps usually on day 2 of the period... literally causing me not to be able to stand up sometimes, I have been taken to the ER probably 5-6 times over the past two years due to severe pain... the cramps have caused nausea and vomitting at time due to the pain... No over the counter medications helped, the only good thing was the pain would usually last about 12 hours so there was always a light at the end of the tunnel... I had been given Darvocet and Vicodin which I was using in conjunction with over the counter pills and was still having a significant amount of pain.

During September/October of 2010 I started having unexplained stomach pain/lower left side only back pain/bowel changes etc... My abdomen was tender and extremely sore when pressed... I went through about 2 months of almost constant pain, lack of sleep etc... Over the course of about 6 weeks I had a CT scan, an ultra sound, an internal ultrasound, an endoscopy, a colonoscopy, several urinalysis and lots of blood work. NOTHING out of the ordinary. During that time period I was changing jobs after 14 years and was under a lot of stress... The tests showed absolutely nothing and eventually everything returned to normal... in November I was feeling pretty much back to normal... one morning I started my period and thought wow I didnt have the back pain or diarrhea... and NO pain...

Ever since November I have had still regular periods with no PMS symptoms and about 99% pain reduction... I am experiencing no cramps at all and would hardly even know I had my period...

How can I go from 10+ years of significant pain which would sometimes cause me to not even be able to stand up... to absolutely NO pain... the first month I thought it was a fluke... but it has now been 8 months and its an amazing difference....

However, I am still having on and off the other problems, the ultimate diagnosis was IBS because they couldnt find anything else. The doctor told me that IBS was kind of a catch all for my symptoms since they were able to rule everything else out... Thats not really good enough for me...

I feel like I have no other options right now because I've had "all" the tests and have seen several different doctors... no one can explain why I was having such severe menstrual cramps in the first place, why the cramps stopped all of a sudden, and why since October 2010 I have ben having on and off lower left side back pain, abdominal pain, bowel changes etc... any suggestions, comments, etc would be greatly appreciated...

I do know that at 5'4 and 190 lbs I am obviously over weight.. so I'm going to work on losing some weight and hopefully will start feeling better...
