Bleeding between periods

Two weekends ago, I had protected sex with my boyfriend. Less than twelve hours later, but not immediately after, I started to bleed. I thought at first that it was my period, coming two weeks early. However, instead of the usual menstrual fluid (dark brown, stringy & containing clots) this was just bright red blood. I usually have severe cramps with my period & had none. This lasted 3 days and was fairly heavy (not just spotting, but filling pads every few hours, which is normal for my periods) & then stopped.

Within hours of the bleeding stopping, I ovulated. I am pretty sure of this, as I once experienced fertility problems and am quite familiar with the ovulatory cervical mucus.

Anyway, now I'm feeling crampy in my lower back & lower right side. Nothing severe, but a bit uncomfortable. I am almost constantly nauseated.

While I don't think I'm pregnant since we did use protection, I'm wondering what could have caused that much bleeding. I have my annual gyn visit in two weeks, but am not sure if I should call & try to get in sooner to get this checked out.
