Viral or allergic cough?

My daughter had a cough that started during ragweed season but got progressively worse and more productive over 10 days or so. After a course of Zithromax, it got better but that could be just because at that point it was going to go away anyway (she is still coughing occaionally, but it's not keeping her up all night like it was). Now I have had a disgusting frequent cough for a week that was accompanied by a headache for several days at the beginning. I've never had anything like this that didn't have a stuffy nose associated with it. Does anyone know if this something weird going around, or are we just suffering from Fall allergies? Any idea as to how long it is lasting, if it is viral, would be helpful. We are in southeastern Michigan, if that helps. Thanks!
