Strange night breathing pattern

48 year old male, avid runner in good shape. I have been haunted with severe nasal allergies where my nose has been stuffed probably 60 to 70% for the past 30 years. I gave up on allergy shots long ago. I've been to serveral ent's that suggest seeing an allergist. So...my continous stuffy nose has lead me to be a mouth breather through much of the night. Here's the strange end of it all....as my lips dry together....air builds up inside my lungs and then upon expulsion...it's like kaboom...like a balloon has exploded. Hard to believe but true..drives my family crazy. Is anyone else familiar with this? Would a CPAP mask help? I've even gone as far as making devices to keep my mouth ajar...which certainly solves the problem. Are there any commericail remedies out there?

thanks to all for you input
