I have had a cough now going on about two weeks. It started out a dry cough that has turned into the most irritating cough with flem. I will have such severe coughing attacks especially when I lay down. I cant seem to catch my breath during my coughing spells either, and it gets to the point where I am gagging. My husband also has this same cough as well as another family member that does not live with us. I thought that it might be Whooping Cough but am not sure. My three year old had a severe cough for about four days but them it went away and has not returned. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this might be?

  • I cough at night too. As far as getting back to sleeping is concerned I found that if a make a cup of warm milk and drink it I get back to sleep Ok until the next coughing fit.....Dairy products produce more mucus which doesn't help if you are suffering from a mucus cough.

  • I'm based in the UK and am suffering with the same symptoms as most of the people have mentioned.I initially got the cough when i was in university it lasted for a year and a half. I took all kinds of medicines, you name it, steroids, antibiotics, allergy tablets....herbal remedies...laser treatment nothing worked. It eventually went away by itself once i went back to Kenya. My diet changed and was more relaxed and was able to sleep. This made all the differenceThe next spell occurred 2 years later when i was working in the UK, i was over-worked, travelling a lot from work and not taking care of my diet. The only thing that worked was camphor oil, this product is not available in the UK as it can cause addiction as it comes from famous poppy plant, i bought this on a trip to Thailand, never thought to use it for my cough, at the time i was so bad we bought the oil and it sorted me out by rubbing a drop of oil under my nose to breathe in.Ive also been taking honey with haldi and hot water which has helped as haldi is a natural antibacterial fighter. When i have the coughing spells at night warm water has helped me to soothe the throat and go back to sleep.Facial Sauna has played a big part in my recovery from each coughing , the hot moisture air has helped me breathe and rid the spells off quicker. I sometimes put sudafed inhalant oil drops in the facial sauna as this has the camphor ingredient, not all inhalant drops have camphor but this definitely has helped and helps you sleep easily.I also have Sujok done on me during the coughing spells period which helps boost the immune system and activate the muscles which are being strained by the coughing. Sujok is a form of pressure points.I am still battling with each coughing spell i get but hoping something soon will fix this permanently.

We are in Lviv, Ukraine and I have had allergies BAD since the volcano from Iceland salted our place. I have had allergies before but nothing like this: same thing, cough mainly at night, coughing fit in AM when I wake up, can't breath at times, and some what clear during the day. I took a 1 and half liter bottle of water, and mixed in about 2 table sppons of apple cider vinager. I don't know why it works, but I noticed a few years ago I'd dry up after eatting sports peppers in vinegar so I tried it, and it works! I sip it all day and keep the neighbors up with my snoring all night!

  • Hello,I live in the Bay Area. I have a cough similar to most above posts with familiar following symptoms:- productive cough (but no other symptom of illness!)- cough spells almost pass me out (lack of oxygen in lungs)- cough spells give headaches as if received boxing punches on the back of the head- cough spells kept me awake at night- based on past experience, no kind of medicines work(no antibiotics, cold medicines, inhalers, herbs, teas, nothing nothing seemed to work)I know that most of you know that doctors want us to come back to them over and over, and that they are only interested in our PAYMENTS and not in our health. So being an engineer, I did a lot of research on this on my own - reading technical materials in the library, talking to healthy people, understanding what cured me last few years (yes I had had it for last 5 years every time at the onset of cold weather, and it would last for 2-3 months).I have this friend in LA who is a beautiful lady who simply never gets sick. She seemed like a wise person, so I insisted her to think and give me an answer as to why I get sick every year, and why she never gets sick. (In the past as well she had given me some useful advice on life issues and it seemed that she had a wider vision on things than me).She called me after two days, and said the following.***I don't expect anyone to agree, I am just sharing on what CURED ME ***According to her: - Certain illnesses are caused by our mental state (OK I agreed)- Some other illnesses are caused by us feeling lonely (even if we work with 200 people, even if we have large extended families, but if we have no one who truly understand us, that makes us lonely)- When we have very young children, we feel more lonely because we feel that children are happy to be playing and coughing, but when we cough or are sick, they are too young to sympathize with us)- Coughing is our body's language to tell others "help me", but we are not conscious of it- Coughing creates a vicious cycle (in Engineering its called feedback theory, it is widely used in Audio amplifiers, flight control system of a fighter planes etc etc, and very well known to engineers)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feedback- Coughing can be triggered by unpleasant events or thoughts (for example phone ringing when we are tired - and of course we are always tired because of coughing! - example of vicious cycle)CURE:- Remove all negative thoughts and complaints from one's mind (at first I was skeptical)- Remove all thoughts of life being unfair, politicians being wicked etc etc (its hard to do)- Forgive anyone and everyone (it was hard as well)- Don't let anything bother you: (neighbors dog barking, let it be, you are coughing and others are sleeping, let it be, just stop worrying)- Don't harbor negative thoughts of any type (it takes some practice)- Drink pleasant warm liquids while being thankful for what we have(be it warm water, warm tea, warm lemonade, warm apple cider, whatever)- Do not worry that even the Doctors don't know how to fix it(you will be surprised how little doctors actually know)- talk to lots of friends, make more friends, mingle with people, help someone anyway you can, - if your cough is mentioned, just mention that its going away, do not linger on temporary sympathy from anyone, - Do not listen to CNN or other negative TV programs(Remember their job is to get viewers so they can sell advertisements)- Wear warm clothing and take short walks (10 minutes at first, increase to 30 minutes) when its convenient - preferably with a friendBefore sleeping:- Sit quietly and be thankful for one more day on earth (do not reflect on negative events)- Breath slowly and determine that cough will not ruin your sleep- Feel secure that you truly have many friends and that you are not alone at all- sip some warm soothing tea, read some pleasant book (real or on internet)- Do not let events relating to people in your life enter your mindIf you wake up at night (remember, waking up is another vicious cycle):- without too much thoughts - just clear out the throat, - gargle with warm water- make some more warm tea (or any juice mixed with warm water), sip it for a few minutes- ease back to sleep without any worries at all(More sleep helps you get better, so one needs to break this cycle ofcoughing --> waking up ---> coughing more), so sleep is most importantI did the above for only 3-4 days and my cough of 2 months was gone!My Conclusions:- Purpose of medicine is to make the company money, not really to cure you- Purpose of doctors is to make he / she money, not really to help you- Mental "spring cleaning" removes many poisons from our body- Coughing is a classic symptom of mental conditions - Being around wise and well meaning people is part of the cure- Removing stressful thoughts, and enjoying simple things in life is part of the cure- Positive approach to life will keep the cough from coming back, - And if it comes back, then you know how to fix it**** Wish all of you a speedy recovery *******

  • I can't believe it - you sound just like me. I have been sick since May 2010 got a little better in July 2010 and then sick again in August and still coughing. I am truly exhausted and I am someone who never gets ill. Have you gotten better yet or are you still ill?In the first week of sept.2009 ,the H1N1 was making its rounds in the school systems here as well as probably everywhere.although it wasnt being tested for in a regular flu like illness. i and a couple of co-workers developed a bad cough and sinus drainage issues that went on further than the normal six weeks of a common flu.I never remember a time i thought i had a fever,i had no rash.the youngest co-worker slowly seemed to get better(20 somthing) after a few months. the second co-worker remained coughing sometimes violently into her 4-5th month but significantly less often than i.(early 40's) I the oldest (57) the only smoker(very light but long term) am still coughing to this day, some 167 days later, although i droped the cigarettes completely months ago. several doctor visit, the regular flu shot, several courses of antibiotics, lung X-ray,showing nothing, steroid inhaler-useless.,every thing made over the counter, homemade chicken soup ,water, vit c every few hours ,all to no avail. I who was never sick, believed i could cure the common cold is now taking the double dose of over the counter cough syrup to help me sleep thru the coughing that still does not cease.doctor suggested by the way. some of the other common symtoms seem to be a sense of sratchy tickle on the roof of the mouth, with occuring rough irrated spot on roof of mouth , mucus seem sometimes thick and almost unmovable at times other, runs thin and unnoticable down back of throat and into lungs. the coughting has been so violent and often that the diaphram seems bruised and painful, sometimes coughing so hard my head will hurt for a little bit or it triggers my gag reflex and i cant stop throwing up.not having shortness of breath i still excercise almost every day no0 less than 1/2hour to an hour.I refuse to believe this is permanent.some days are not bad.but then it's like groung hogs day coming back like you just came down with a new cold .lying down the nights are always bad.humidifyer didnt help, otc cough drops seem to be a little helpful, note to self ,must take stock. open to suggestion in portland....

  • Whooping cough is the most severe, deep cough you can ever imagine. It's like you're barfing your lungs out; and that's what you do, cough and barf, cough and barf. You'll know you need to get to a doctor quick. My husband's cough has sounded like the whooping cough as I listen to the recording on the website...but he gets this every year...so it can't be whooping cough can it?It starts out with normal cold symptoms, then can transform very quickly into a "whooping" like cough. This happens every year for about 13-15 weeks. There was one year when he did not get it like this.I will continue to seach, as he is very tired of this problem.I will post if ever we find out.SFM

  • I live in the Bay Area and I TOO have that cough. It started only at night and now it has been going on five weks ans it has turned into this cough with just a tiny bit of fleghm (sp?) every few minutes or so. I have met MANY people at work , friends etc.. who also have it. I think the Doctors are missing an epidemic of some sort. Monicayeah, i agree. i was even considering the thought of bio warfare. i have had a mostly dry cough for months that started with a cold. it feels like my lungs are trying to get rid of something but can't. sometimes i choke and can't get my breath. i may have allergies to wheat and yeast but i'm not sure because it started after that "cold". kinda scared and i've heard others mention "having a cough that won't go away"
