I have had a cough now going on about two weeks. It started out a dry cough that has turned into the most irritating cough with flem. I will have such severe coughing attacks especially when I lay down. I cant seem to catch my breath during my coughing spells either, and it gets to the point where I am gagging. My husband also has this same cough as well as another family member that does not live with us. I thought that it might be Whooping Cough but am not sure. My three year old had a severe cough for about four days but them it went away and has not returned. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this might be?

  • post nasal drip.the lot of you.shared circumstances is the clue here.evironmental allergens=swelling in nasal passages+blocked sinuses=infected sinuses allround.then the bacterial goo leaks down the back of your throatsand irritates your lungs.they become hypersensitive to anything but absolutely clean air and produce lots of phlegm to protect themselves.bingo!chronic cough allround.clean your environment. tackle allergy (assume it is present)with cetirizene. reduce nasal swelling with sudafed. the doctor should prescribe several courses each of high dose antibiotic.because the lungs have become sensitised you will need to persevere for perhaps three or four months after the bacteria are dead.this is the reason people with this problem say that the antibiotics made no difference.how do i know?easy! p.n.d. is the most common cause of chronic cough.the next trouble is that once your lungs have learned to respond inthis way they willgo back to it whenever you have a cold or flu and you willprobably be backto sensitised lungs and a long wait again.avoid colds!

  • i have also has this long lasting cough that has crazy cough spells, and sometimes gagging, but it seams to be associated with a cold of some kind. i also had tired spells, and headaches, and the coughing been going on for a month now. i guess that could just be because of the energy needed to cough up the phlegm and the sinuses being congested. but what i don't understand is why haven't i seen this before, and why am i hearing of so many cases of it? i have had allergies my whole life, mostly stuffy noses and postnasal drip. now my baby has it and she's only 4 1/2 months old. will she need antibiotics.if anyone knows if this could be dangerous for the baby and has any ideas or thoughts of a diagnoses, please let me know. it's pretty scary to see a 4 month old baby choking(mostly from gagging) because she's coughing. thanks

  • I've had a severe cough since mid october. I've been to the doctor many times and the hospital. They've given me many different antibiotics and steriod shots and nothing has worked. I think I may have whooping cough. I haven't had a good nights sleep in forever.

  • I just had to respond after reading this. I too live in LA and have had this for months. My doc prescribed antibiotics - they took my cough away for about a week - then it came back. It started where it only happened at night - it seems every couple of hours I would wake up from coughing and the only thing that would help is to get up - walk around a bit - and take a halls. Then it moved to daytime cough as well. My doc also though it was reflux and gave me meds but I still have it. I am going to try the antibiotics again to see. I am tired because I cannot get a full nights sleep. I dont know if its just the LA air because I travel quite a bit and I was still getting the coughs. Any info anyone has I would love to hear it.

It went on for years, but finally at 12 yrs. old his abnoids were removed and after that he was fine. But it was a long road to 12. Hope they can do something sooner for you. I also suffer nasal drip really bad, with a cough even choking. I always have mucous in the back of my throat. Dryness and lying down makes it worse. Specialist thought it was Asthma but it's not!!!! Good luck with the baby

  • Got in in Florida too , taken Antibiotics no help . Steriod pills opened me up but as they wore off the cough is back . Most people at work have had it . Mine I weeze all the time when breathing , and in the evening I start hacking away .My doctor think's it's a allergy even though Im 34 and never have had one AND a few people at work who had this cold are still hacking/weezing .I traveled to Houstin , TX from Florida and continued hacking there for a week and a half , which I told my doc but he still thinks it's allergy .Another guy at work had 2 different hardcore antibiotics before his was KO'd .His doc was about ready to admit him to the hospital and use IV antibiotics .They are keeping this hush-hush , it's obvious to me they have a superbug on the loose and are not talking about it .I'd like to know how so many people are sick with this crap and the CDC has not uttered a peep .

  • My husband had this cough and he works at a power plant. I thought it could be related to that, but now I too have it. I never go to the plant because it is fifty miles from here. We live in the country, but there is a power plant near our house. I was up last night gasping for air, and also I vomited. It was so scary, I thought I would never catch my breath. Neither of us smoke, so I don't know what the cause of this is. We have never experienced anything like this. My husband took antibiotics, steroid shots and prescribed cough medicine, and he is still coughing, and it has been several months now.

  • So the ridiculous long lasting cough can be MANY things...i've been coughing for 40 days now...it's a very dry non-productive (no phlegm) cough and deep in my lungs...I have gone to the doctor a few times and been given antibiotics, inhalers, cough medicine, etc...after a crazy coughing spell one night, i decided "that's it" and did some research as to what it could be...because i may cough a couple times a day to quite a bit during the day..it differs..and i feel 100% normal except for the cough...when the doc says to cough, i do and of course it sounds NOTHING like the coughing spells i get...plus my lungs sound great when the doc listens to my breath and my chest xray and blood work came out clean...but i am pretty sure i have whooping cough after finding this site...it was a relief...so here ya go...www.whoopingcough.net (whooping cough DOT net)or it could be TB (non-active)...which i'm going to get tested for next time...or something different altogether...but i have found NOTHING helps as of yet....i thought i would share the site with you all...because it helped me out a lot....it even has SOUND clips of the cough! (not everyone has the "whoop" sound either)...the only thing i haven't figured out yet is i have been getting a metallic taste when i cough...like dried blood....no idea where it's coming from, but it's gross!good luck!

  • I've been coughing for 2 weeks. My husband says its allergies, but I don't think so. I've never had allergies before. I tried some allergy medicines but it didn't help. I cough all day and night. Sometimes I gag when I cough and other times I can't catch my breath. I'll take sips of water to try to stop coughing. I've tried different cough medicines and nothing helps. My right side of my back hurts from coughing so much. The coughing also tires me out. By nighttime I'm exhausted. Glad to find out I'm not the only one with this cough. Wish I could find something that would help.I went to the doctor today and she said my cough was due to post nasal drip. She gave me a prescription for antibiotics and cough syrup. I'm hoping that they will help. Sometimes I cough so much that it tires me out.

  • one course of antibiotics alone will not put a dent in post nasal drip.you need three or four, in sequence, obviously.avoid allergens and infections in furure.and even then it will not appear to respond after those are finished.your lungs will need a few months to recover from their hypersensitised state.thats why people so often report that"it lasted over three months!"and "the antibiotics did no good!"it may help in the long term to take sudafed, but there is no substitute for understanding what you are up against.

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • Hi Thought I'd post my persistant coughing story here and see if anyone can come up with any ideas....It started in January 2007, constant productive coughing most of the day and made worse by going to bed. I was also waking with the cough. I had no cold, no flu symptoms just a productive cough. As six weeks went by I realised this was no ordinary cough and my Doctor prescribed me cough medicine and a course of antibiotics because of it being suspected chest infection. Then at 8 weeks I was back at my Doctors again who gave me heartburn medicine, as I was complaining of heartburn which I feel at the time was a 'product' of all the coughing not a symptom. I was also given a asthma reliever inhaler...which I tried and does not seem to help in the slightest. In the meantime my coughing steadily got worse. I found during these sudden attacks my nose would suddenly stream at the same time..and I had to rush to the toilet so as to not have a bladder accident. All this coughing has badly affected my bladder control. Sometimes I would cough so badly I would vomit at one point I was vomiting everyday!! Anyway, I then got a cold and things began to get worse for me. My chest became extremely wheezy and I was having a terrible time sleeping. So back to the doctors I went and this was at the three month stage. He listened to my chest and heard the wheeze and prescribed me asthma steroid spray, along with a steroid nasal spray and antihistimines (for mild hayfever which I suffer with) . He gave me a peak flow diary and tester. (Which I have been using ever since..although my peak flow is below the norm it never really goes bad its lowest has been around the 300 mark)So I went home and tried the steroid inhaler. Within a few days to a week I noticed about a 50% improvement over my symptoms. I went back to the doctor a few weeks later who says he thinks I have asthma but I am somewhat scepticle. The reliever inhaler has no affect in my opinion. Also my peak flow is not in the normal range but sits just below it. Although I do believe the steroid inhaler has helped in some way. My Doctor has made me an appoinment with an asthma clinic in my local hospital and I have the appointment in three weeks time. But I really do think it is not asthma. Surely the reliever medicine would be more helpful, also my peak flow would be worse I think?? Also the only time I was wheezy is when I had the bad cold. Surely I would feel chest tightness and wheeziness?? In summary I have found my cough can be set off by:Crumbly or flakey foods Hot, spicy or even pepper in food Not drinking loads of water in the daytime. A Hot environment...ie: sitting on a hot busExercise or walking a lotNot taking my steroid spray the day beforeI have found my cough is helped by drinking tons of water. I permantely walk around with a drinking bottle (very annoying) It can also be eased somewhat by drinking water during an attack. Also my cough begins to get worse towards the end of the evening at dusk. Then worsens went I lie down and sometimes I will wake cough for a while, drink water then go back to sleep. Then wake again an hour later, drink water and go back to sleep again. However, some nights I will have a little cough when I lie down and then sleep all the way through the nightAlso sometimes when my throat is really itchy and I have had a bad day of coughing, I find I cannot talk much without coughing inbetween sentences and talking to people becomes difficult to do.Finally, other symptoms that occur at the time of a coughing fit which can occur several times a day..to all day. And last from one minute right up to 15 is :Streaming nose, which I have to blow while coughingCoughing up loads of watery phelgm Occasionally retching and vomitingStreaming eyes which go blood shotExtremely itchy tickly throatGasping for air between coughsI am now into the sixth month of this coughing. And although it is not as bad as it was a few months back it is still a major problem for me and makes me feel so down at times. Also I think my children need a break from rushing to grab me some water everytime I start to cough! lol ...Any feedback will be much appreciated....

  • I too have this cough that will not go away. I have had it for 3 months now. At first, the doctor was treating me for a sinus infection. I was put on 10 days of Biaxin. That didn't work, so they put me on another 10 days of Biaxin. In the beginning, I was exhausted all the time. After taking the antibiotics, some of the symptoms did go away, but the cough remains. Then, another doctor told me that I had sinusitis and he put me on another 14 days of Biaxin, gave me a breathing treatment and said he thought I had asthma. The breathing treatment did help a little, but not much. Basically, I have been on biaxin for 34 days and still have the cough. I am still coughing up phlegm (spelling), which you would think after that many days of antibiotics that I wouldn't have anything left in me. I don't sleep well at night, because the cough wakes me up. I understand about the other poster that mentioned coughing so much that it is causing bladder problems. I have tried cough medications, but nothing seems to help.

  • I just had to respond to this I am just getting over the worst cold I've ever had this past winter. Starting right after Christmas it just went into my chest and I kept coughing on a daily basis all the way up til April. Went to the doctor and he prescribed some antibiotics but the cold would just come back. THen he put me on another stronger antibiotic, prenisone, and an inhaler (abuteral) for Asthma. That wiped it out too for awhile but then naturally caught another cold again. Forced to see a pulmonologist after being diagnosed w/ acute broncitis and now officially diagnosed with asthma. For the first time in my life and have not had allergies that bad before.

  • Mine started out as a mild sore throat, cold-like symptoms and then right into "bronchitis" immediately. I have been to the doctor numerous times (have a follow-up again Thursday), used two rounds of antibiotics, albuteral inhaler, steriod inhaler, nebulizer with albuteral, even strong doses prendisone tablets two different times, Musenix expectorant and anything else I thought I could take. I would feel a bit better, assume I was on my way to good health again, only to be disappointed in a rew days again. Amazing enough, yesterday was a very good day, but today again I am wheezing, nasal congestion, rasphy cough. Oh, I think I've had every test under the sun too! Xrays, CT, blood etc. They're all normal. My doctor says he will probably send me to a specalist for breathing tests soon. Like I said before, I'm not unable to work or do most activities necessary, but do not feel like I used to. This started last November immediately after receiving my flu shot. That is why I wonder if anyone else had a flu shot that may have these symptoms - - -like a wierd reaction to the shot. I remember when everyone was getting the Swine Flu shot and actually were paralized in the '70's!

  • I did find some information that sounds like something similar to whay we all may have its called RAD (Reactive airway disease). I have not found to much on it yet - but I wanted to share this website with all of you. http://ajrccm.atsjournals.org/cgi/content/full/163/3/S1/S1. I am still looking to fix this. My doctor gave me an inhaler and I was on antibiotics for 10 days - but I still have the cough.

  • Add another victim of the "mystery cough" to the list. I've had it twenty two days now and nothing has helped. I have done two courses of antibiotics, one course of steroids and a strong narcotic cough medicine but nothing made a dent. The only difference is mine started as a non-productive cough and never developed any other sympyoms, no cold symptoms at all. Everything else seems ok. I did have headaches and now sore ribs but I blame all the coughing for that. My chest x-rays were normal, my breathing ok, pulse and blood pressure normal too but I did have a low blood oxygen level.... The only change I've seen is some thick white phlem now after coughing at night. The doctor said come back in if it wasn't better by today but now I don't know. I don't go to the doctor much anyway and I hate the idea of them just guessing about what to do. I can live with the daytime cough it's the nighttime choking that is getting to me. Well at least I know I'm not the only poor sap missing sleep because of a lousy cough.... I guess I'll just keep looking around the net for now and give it a few more days...

It's like you're barfing your lungs out; and that's what you do, cough and barf, cough and barf. You'll know you need to get to a doctor quick.

  • We all had it in OHIO too! It lasts for months. I coughed so hard my bladder leaked! Everyone at work had it and antibiotics did NO GOOD! It had to run it's course. And now I am bringing up phlem when I cough, but I do have allergies. The strange cough though was almost a pneumonia thing. I missed 4 days of work with it and ran a fever. I felt like I was dying. It was a hard, dry cough and the doctor said to drink LOTS of fluid. I take pneumonia shots and flu shots and have never had anything like this before.
