Still coughing up sputum after a month

I got sick about 1.5months ago; just seemed to be a cold mixed with some of my sinus problems (it happens everytime I get sick). It got pretty bad, but after 2 weeks it tapered off to almost nothing, so I assumed it had run its course. I've got no symptoms left except for occassional coughing up of sputum which seems to happen atleast I'd say 10x a day or so. There's no pain or anything, it's just irritating and makes it rather hard to speak with so much of that crap in my throat.

I did drink heavily, though I've begun to quit. I smoke about a pack a week. I have gone off both for a few days to see if it made a difference, but there was no effect.

Am I just being impatient and this will go away soon? Or is there any reason I should have to talk to a doctor?

Thank you,
