Sleep Apnea or something different?

Two nights ago I woke up at 3:00AM with a snort, panicked and gulping for air. I had the distinct sensation that I hadn't been breathing, and thought perhaps I'd been dreaming of being suffocated.
Last night, it happened twice more, hours apart.
I've never before experienced anything like this (to my memory) and I'm quite alarmed that it's been brought on all of a sudden. Last night it was particularly difficult because I was afraid to go back to sleep.
Background info:
I'm 26, female, 115 pounds
I haven't made any changes to my diet or sleep patterns. I did recently get a new mattress (but over a week ago).

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this? Is it sleep apnea just now coming to light? Should I see a doctor?
