I was just wondering if anyone out there has successfully had a pregnancy after suffering a DVT complicated by pulmonary embolism with a genetic blood defect?
I was admitted 6 months ago after the above, and told once I was discharged that I was better off not having any more children because it was unsafe for me, I have read on other sites about women taking heprin while being pregnant, I would like to have another child but just want a little more info and talk to anybody else in a simsilar situation.

  • Yes I got pregnant after having P.E's...I was put on daily shots of Lovenox (blood thinner) In the last 2 weeks was put on Heprin 2 shots a day because it leaves your system faster then Lovenox in case you want or need an epidural during labor.I have to admit it was alot of blood work to check my protime..and well the meds made me sick alot and gave me migraines ,so I took migraine meds..But in the end I had a perfectly healthy beautiful full term baby boy!Best of luck to you!<33

  • Yes you carry a baby if you have had a PE. I had a PE when I was 7 1/2 mths pregnant with twins. I was put on lovenox and then put on heprin when I was put on bed rest in the hospital. There are many anticoagulants out now that will not effect the baby. If you are really concerned I would suggest getting a second opinion.

  • Pulmonary embolism is a common and potentially lethal disease; unfortunately, the diagnosis is often missed because patients with PE present with nonspecific signs and symptoms. If left untreated, approximately one third of patients who survive an initial PE subsequently die from a future embolic episode. Most patients succumb to PE within the first few hours of the event. In patients who survive, recurrent embolism and death can be prevented with prompt diagnosis and therapy.

I was already on heparin because of a condition called antiphospholipid syndrome. I see a perinatologist he suggested if I want to have another baby that I should quit Warfarin and go on lovenox and be followed closely after I become pregnant. I dont think he is thrilled with the idea but he is ok with me trying for one more.

  • I was admitted in the hospital back in February suffered from graves disease had my thyroids taken out , then was diagnosed with blood clots in lungs my question is I am still being treated for them, but will I be able to have children while still on coumadin? Or is it to risky to get pregnant while on this medication......

  • I know it is NOT safe to take Coumadin while pregnant. It should be on the leaflet you get with the prescription. I know bc I want another child and I am on Coumadin also, my Dr said there are shots to use while pregnant instead of the Coumadin. He also recommended that I avoid another pregnancy altogether since I suffrered PE. I want another baby though.
