Hi everyone, i'm new to the site so am not sure how to use everything properly so i am sorry if i do anything wrong :)

My name is Brad and I am 17 years old. A few weeks ago i was lying in bed the night after i had been out the night before drinking with friends.

Whilst laying in bed, i felt my heart go funny and, what i can only describe as, it felt like it stopped for a split second. I felt as though i was going to pass out, i quickly got up and went to inform my mum of what was going on, i was really panicking and my heart rate was ridiculously fast.
I had a rushing feeling down both arms and i felt very dizzy and short of breath.

My mum rang the ambulance and i was hooked up to a heart rate monitor where it showed my heart rate as 144 beats a minute when the average heart rate is between 70 and 80.

Has anyone got any idea what this could be down to? The hospital put it down purely to a panick attack but i still struggle with shortness of breath and chest pains in the left side of my chest although i have been given an asthma pump?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  • What were you drinking? How much? Do you remember? Were you also taking any drugs or meds? Did your mum and did the docs know you had been drinking before your symptoms developed? How much water do you drink daily? How much caffeine? DOM

  • Thanks for replying Dom.I was drinking vodka, and i had enough to make me rather drunk and i admit i was a bit silly with it, but surely that wouldn't be the cause of me STILL having chest pains and breathing problems after a month? There wasn't any drugs involved no.The doctors knew i had been drinking but still put it down to a panic attack, however, i fail to see how a panic attack could be causing me chest pains and a tight chest a month down the line?I drink about 3 small bottles of water a day if not more, i'm not sure what that adds up to, perhaps 1 and a half litres or 2 litres. And i normally will have a cup of tea in the morning and thats about it?thanks for the response.

  • Did the doctor mention anything about anxiety? I suffer with anxiety attacks and from what you described it sounds like that could be what it is.I was having the same symptoms as you and at first I thought I was having a heart attack even though I am only 27.Unlike panic attacks, anxiety attacks come on gradually and can last much much longer. Mine can last for a couple of weeks. My chest hurts, my heart races, becomes irregular and feels like it misses a beat and that really is uncomfortable. I find it hard to breath and I feel dizzy.I went to the doctor and told him I was convinced I had something wrong with my heart, he did some tests and said that my heart is very healthyand that it is an anxiety attack.I wasn't very reassured and when it started again a few weeks later I went back to a different doctor and got a second opinion and again the doctor said the same thing, Anxiety! I can feel when one is coming on before it starts and I know how scary it isto feel like your having a heart attack so I try my best to stop being so anxious and stressed and that seems to do the job!

I think they need to do more testing on your heart. Have you ever had shortness of breath before? After exercising? It is possible is is just anxiety, but more testing should be ruled out. A heart monitor test perhaps? Please consider finding a good acupuncturist to help with these symptoms. Oriental medicine is very helpful for chest pain, anxiety and asthma symptoms. www.acufinder.com to find a qualified practitioner near you. Best wishesDOM
