Background: I am a younger (under 25) cyclist and would not really consider myself to be out of shape (I’ll do 50+ mile rides, etc. etc.) and my BMI lands far within healthy limits. I have severe allergies (mainly when I’m inside around my cats but that’s another thing--on the bike my allergies aren’t bad and at worst I’ll have a runny nose). My allergist, nor any other doctor, has called me asthmatic (though I’ve not asked about this). Because I have horrid allergies so much of the time I’ve grown accustomed to just breathing through my mouth. A thing that I’m sure is un-related is that at my last physical, my doctor noticed a minor heat murmur while I was lying down (and he seemed to think that it went away when I tightened my chest muscles).
The Problem: When on the bike I will sometimes get really short of breath, even when everybody else is not breathing any harder than usual. When this happens I really try to focus more on breathing through my nose but I’ll always feel like I’m never able to get near as much oxygen in as I should (so I fall back into quickly breathing in from my mouth). During these “episodes” I don’t recall ever having any chest pains or tightening.. It sometimes may take me 5 minutes to get my breathing back “in control” and I’ve never had any issues after exercising like someone with exercise induced asthma might.
Does this just sound like general lack of fitness despite how active and “healthy” I am? Could I just reach “my limit” when doing seemingly easy things on the bike? Or does it sound like it still could be exercise induced asthma?
