Chronic cough?

Since I was a child (Currently 18) I would get a horrible cough that lasted a week or two. This would happen every month, or so, about 5 times a year.
Since I was 17, I've smoked marijuana heavily, and this is the second time it's happened since then.
Anyone aware of a condition of re-occurring chronic cough?
I do not have asthma, but it's in my family.

  • To add: Once, I took Delsym (SP) the day I noticed I started feeling like I was going to start my coughing routine, and it stopped that day. Another time, I smoked a cigarette, thinking tar would cover the irritation, and it worked, for that night.I payed attention to it yesterday, when I noticed symptoms, It was a phlemy cough, just like a normal cold, but I had no other sick symptoms. When this started yesterday, I was in a room with 3 cats and a dog, but don't assume it is a reaction to animals, because each time I've had this, It was in a diffrent situation, even different states.

  • More to add:I have, what I believe is a small obsessive disorder, nothing serious, just annoying little twitches. My father has it worse, grunts and more intense twitches. I was thinking, maybe my cough was started by phlegm, then developed an irritation, which became a habit, from my littles obsessive habits.Does this sound possible?

  • Problem solved, if anyone else has this problem, here is what my doctor told me.Diagnosed as Bronchitis.Prescribed Advair, and ProAir (Albuterol) and Azithromycin Antibiotics.Advair and Albuterol are usually for asthma, but Advair has helped A LOT in the past.

  • marijuana is good for a lot of conditions, including tics and spasms. a cough is a kind of spasm. you shouldn't mask a cough that's productive, they say. if you are concerned the pot is causing you problems you should try stopping smoking to see if things clear up. i doubt they will, but it's worth a try. be sure you are using a water pipe so there is less bad and better good in your smoke as well.

If you continue to smoke MJ it will eventually turn into Chronic Bronchitis, which is incurable. You had the acute form, which can be cleared up. Chronic cannot. It is a form of COPD. Look it up.
