  • Hi,You posted under cushings syndrome is that because you saw the TV show I did about the fast weight gain and it mostly in the belly area? I was just wondering - I am thinking of asking my doctor if he would think to test for this on me - - I have similar symptoms but I have celiac and have always been really tiny and now in the last month I have gained 15 pounds - without any change in eating or exercise not sure what is going on - plus I am getting muscle cramps in different spots of my body at different times of the day.

  • :) It could very well be Cushing's Syndrome. I had it 4 years ago and had ALL the symptoms you have and more. Read my post on the misdiagnosis forum. The initial tests to have done are an am cortisol level, a pm cortisol level and a 24 urine for free cortisol. Cushing's Syndrome is when your body is making too much cortisol (your body's natural steroid). Usually a tumor in the pituitary gland or in the adrenal glands causes it. It is treatable by surgery to remove the tumor. It can also be caused by being on cortisone. You need to get tested ASAP. Your primary care physician can do the initial testing but you should be referred to an endocrinologist if the results come back abnormal. If you have it, it is best to be treated at a major medical center because it is a rare condition. Good luck and let me know what happens.Laurie Hahnlensamnlinz@aol.com

  • Yep, get tested for Cushing's Syndrome and also for metabolic or Syndrome X. Most doctors haven't heard of Syndrome X, so have a look on the net for it. Both these condition can cause the very symptomes you describe.agape, searchingsam

  • I would also get checked for hyperparathyroidism. I was diagnosed w/ it and alos have some of the symptoms you are experiencing. Have your Dr. check your calcium and pth levels to see if they are high.

I went from 110 lbs, to 198 in less than four months, and the doctor who saw me said, and i quote, "don't eat so much". Then he said, "You must be trying to get pregnant." That proved to me he didn't read my charts as I have scarred tubes with poly cystitis. I spent five months charting mood swings, and medications... and noted that the pain meds I am on for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have directly affected my weight. When I brought this to the attention of the doctor he once again said, "or maybe you had ice cream". He was useless. For 23 years of my adult life- I was THIN. And, out of the blue, I have weight gain, edema, irritability, PMT, and now facial discolorations and BREAST MILK! The reaction was, "you have too much sex with your husband." WE have NONE because I have no sex drive. I kept a food diary. I was on nutrisystem. I have a personal trainer that I work with twice a week. And I don't eat after dark. I presented ALL of this to the GP, who gave me different blood tests and found my hormones were just bizzare. NO testosterone, NO estrogen, trace levels of progestin, and TSH levels are through the roof. Friday I see a different endicrinologist, with the newest tests in hands- and I had my GP tell me that I have probably been battling with Hashimotos. Had the original Endo bothered doing the tests, he may have found it sooner. I have a mass in my thryroid, and my lymph nodes swell so much that I can't even drop my arms to the side. Have you got any news on your condition yet? I'm considering visiting the Mayo in Pheonix. Do you find the doctors where you live dismiss you because you're a woman? ratmando:eek:
