long-standing fatigue getting solved?

I am a 60-year-old lady who has struggled against depression most of my life, also with bouts of anxiety. Thinking that others knew or had something I didn't, I just toughed-out a productive, reasonably successful life, mostly on "guts". I have been very tired and struggling to keep my head up my whole life...I have a very hi IQ, a college education, 20 years with a major corporation, 2 marriages, 2 kids, no drug or legal crises, no major illnesses or accidents...so it just shouldn't have been SO hard!! I have been thru many doctors, counselors, and alternative health folks as well as a constant, almost compulsive, self-treatment search. Last year I hit the wall and could no longer force myself to work and exercise and have a life. I had been to a shrink & on anti-depressants, had my thyroid meds messed with, finally returned to a naturopath who tested my cortisol levels...normal total for 4-part test is about 25-45, my # was 12! Nine months of supplements only moved it to 14, so I switched to a ND who was covered by an MD (Seattle area) and could therefore prescribe bio-identical hydrocortisone. Have been taking 17.5 mg/day for about 12 weeks, living restfully (no dieting, no exercise above walking, keeping stress low and enjoyments high) and experiencing considerable return of mental energy, positive thinking, focus, motivation, and physical energy output. (I'm starting a part-time job next week & feel able & even a bit excited!) A retest is pending, but doc says it takes 3-6 months for the adrenals to regenerate. I don't know how long the adrenal ccondition has existed because it was never before tested. This ND also discovered food allergies to eggs and dairy, which I ate a lot. She also directed me to a lot of other supplements that may be helping along with the hydrocortisone. I am very sad for the losses and struggles I have suffered, but trust God to make good use of my experiences to help others - it was He who directed me to try yet another doctor when I was entirely ready to give up last summer & just resign myself to being either "lazy, crazy, or old". My word of encouragement is "if they don't find anything wrong, but you know you are not right, find another doctor..nobody cares about you as much as YOU do & you deserve to have a full, happy, healthy life!"

  • Hi Judy:Tell me more about your adrenals and how you were feeling at your worst. What is the treatment you are taking and do most doctors understand what you were going through and what you needed to feel better? Or did it take time to find this doctor. I am not having any luck and continue to be fatigued. I don't go to my naturopathic doctor because my insurance doesn't pay and the medical doctors I go to for other things don't respect the ND's because of all the supplements they get you on. BTW, I am now 52. I got sick about 3 and 1/2 years ago.I hoped we could have a discussion here about these issues. Hope to hear from you.Karen

  • I am experiencing very similar symptoms. My extreme fatigue has been going on for over 2 years now. I am only 26 years old and am on my third doctor. I have been through numerous rounds of blood work, etc and have yet to find an answer. What you are saying here is very interesting to me. How did you approach your MD regarding this?
