My son has always been a little different, i think he is special and wouldn't have him any other way. He is having problems in school. He is way behind in math and reading. He has learning disorders, but no one can figure out what disorder he has or how to help him learn better. His teacher told me about figure X an some of his symtoms do fit. He had 1 grand mal seizure when he was 5 (he is 8 now). He was born with only one testicle. He does have a high forhead, but so do I. He has always been a late bloomer. I am concerned that he may have a disorder I am unaware of. There is no mental retardation in my or his father's family. if anyone out there has a son with fragile X or knows anything about it i would love to hear from you.

  • hi my name is lisa hill i have just found out that my son sam has full mutation of fragile x syndrome it has taken 17 years to find this out and it was not the doctors who found it out it was me who did all the investigating it has still come as a shock but i always new there was somthing else other than global learning what the doctors have always said was wrong with sam it is worth while just asking your doctors to give your son a blood test to confirm weather your son has it or not because he could be missing out of such alot of help and if he is misdiagnosed as my son has the older they get the harded it will be for both of you he needs all the help now .

  • hi, my family is composed of fragile x carriers randing from barely noticable to profoundly autistic/ retarded. this has been in our family for generations- but not obvouis until ours. Mine and my 2 sisters children are the first generation to show enough symptoms to prompt testing. The only way to know for sure is through a chromosome study. (good news-you can give the blood first, and maybe keep your child from having to :) )Because a male with fragile x is garanteed to give it to his daughters (x chromosome makes a girl) but to make a son- he gives a Y chromosome. Therefore- its not from dads side of the family. Afemale carrier has 2 x chromosomes in her body, its a 50/50 chance of which one she will give to the child, a good x or fragile x. You can get your blood drawn first- then if you are negative, its not fragile x. if you are positive then your little guy should have a blood draw and chromosome study too. If it is fragile x- dont be afraid:o there are alot of good treatments for him including various therapies, relaxation techniques, etc. but if you are a carrier- it will be a concern for any further children you have as they too -have the 50/50 chance. i hope this helps and if you need more info or support you can write back to kamsae@aol.com
