Back in 95 I was got sick and was in a coma for 2 months with something that they never found the right diagnosis for. Just recently I became aware of the illness called the hanta virus. I know now that that was what it must have been, I even remembered a mouse encounter that must have triggered
it. I need to hear from someone else who lived through this illness and see if they are still getting sick yrs later. I get all of the symptoms at least twice a year, which results in a trip to the emergency room, and more misdiagnosing. Since I found the hanta virus diagnosis I have not been ill yet and have no health insurance. I cant get the hospitals to take this seriously, they all say I have a urinary tract infection and the flu, always dehydrated, sometimes kept in the hospital for days. If I dont go in after a week, it never goes away on its own I will get pneumonia, which the doctors in 95 said would kill me. I need to know what other survivors of the disease are still going through, if anything. I am desperate, and with the side effects from the illness have a hard time finding and keeping a job, the hospital bills I owe are huge.
thank you

  • I survived the Hanta Virus. I was the 21st known victom and only the 7th survivor. Very scarey situation as I wasnt diagnosed until after I survived. My original doctor had sent my blood work off to the CDC and I had been sent to a larger hospital. The doctors made sure I lived long enough for my body to fight it off. Honestly, I was only sick for a couple of weeks. I was very weak when I went home and had breathing issues for a bit. Other than that I have been fine for the past 17 years. You really should have them test you for other things as I havent heard of anyone having lasting affects for that long of a time.

  • In 2007 I acquired the Hantavirus-disease (the Puumala-type, which is more common in Belgium and other country's of Europe). Often it is less severe than the Hantavirus-type that is known in the USA but exceptionally it can also have the lungs as target and then it becomes worse. I stayed in ICU for 5 days, needing mechanical ventilation for 2 and a half days. It took me a long time to regain my strength, both mentally as physically and indeed I have the same experience of being confronted (approximately twice a year) with flu-like illnesses. As a matter of fact I spent a week in hospital last week because of a pneumonia(?). It was a weird kind of illness: no very large signs of a pneumonia could be seen on the X-ray but it presented in the same way, with high fever, coughing and shortness of breath. Thats why they treated it in the same way, with antibiotics. I feel exhausted and suffer from muscle-weakness and shortness of breath. Furthermore they told me it was no classical case of pneumonia, neither could they find any bacteria. It all seems so strange.... I read an article once about the memory of your immune-system. Virus-attacks that resemble hanta-virus cause a high state of alert in the body once you went through Hantavirus-disease. It can trigger a strong immune-response every time you run in to something that resembles the Hanta-virus. I think that is still the case, even after three years.....I totally agree that is makes it hard to find and keep a suitable job because your health stays very vulnerable al the time.Maybe science may find out more about this one day. In the meantime you could join the Hanta-survivorsgroup on facebook. • I recently found this website and post and am so excited to hear from other hantavirus survivors. Please, please respond as I am anxious to talk and compare notes. I got Hantavirus in October, 2010. I was in the ICU on a vent for 7 days, then spent another 7 days in the hospital. My kidneys stayed strong, but my lungs, heart, and liver all tried to fail on me. The doctors didn't know what was wrong with me until I was already off oxygen, and waiting for my heart rate to come back up to a safe enough level to be released from the hospital. It took about a month after being released from the hospital for me to feel back to my usual strength. I've had bouts with dizziness, tingling in my face, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and other flu-like symptoms, even nausea, and diarrhea. The symptoms have been sporadic, and inconclusive with a common cold, or flu. My doctor recently ran a panel of tests looking for autoimmune diseases, and the initial results have shown that I have antibodies to 9 different, and very serious, autoimmune diseases. Has anyone else had any autoimmune testing done? I'm wondering if the results I had may have something to do with my immune system being affected from fighting off hantavirus last year. 9 is a pretty big number, so I'm not sure what to make of the tests results. Does anyone know of any studies, or specific doctors, that have an interest in hantavirus that I could contact?
