My friend who I have known for 20 years will no longer ride on a Interstate. She FREAKS out if you get on one so you have to exit off asap. This is something that started about 5-6 years ago. I do know her husband (who passed away 3 yrs ago) had sleep apnea and he did scare her a few times when they were on a Interstate. But, even after he passed away she is still scared to ride on the Interstate with anyone ! She has no problems riding on back roads or streets in town. Recently she had a friend pass away and wanted to go to her funeral but would not since she needed to go on I-26. I took her to the funeral on back roads, which took me like 45 mins.extra.I have read about a phobia called Amaxophobia but in reading about it, it seems like that is a fear of riding in a car on any road. By the way she drove for many years but now she does not drive at all. What is wrong with her ? I feel bad for her but just don't understand. Is it a mental thing ? Is it treatable by a Dr. or medication ? Thanks ahead for any info. anyone can share...Thanks, Pam

  • I have amaxophobia. I fear being the passenger in a car on any road, but especially highways. Not sure why highways are worse for me, probably because people are traveling at a faster rate, which increases the chance of an accident being life-threatening. I hate all highways, and avoid them at all costs, even if it takes 3 times as long to go on the side streets. I hate having this condition, and all I can say is please don't ever ridicule your friend, get annoyed, mad, or frustrated with her when she starts to panic. It is NOT directed at other you, nor is it implying that you are an unsafe driver. Showing anger or frustration will only increase her anxiety. Also, explaining why she has no reason to fear the highway or your driving will also make it worse. This is something she probably already knows and it will frustrate her that you are not understanding that although irrational, is something she CANNOT help.
