I Have been having right flank pain for over 3 years now. It started with blood in urine Doctor thought it was a bladder infection (3 times). About a month later I ended up in the ER with excruciating right flank pain. I had a 7 mm Kidney stone in my ureter, The urologist done ESWL (lithotripsy), twice before it was supposedly crushed. I did not have insurance at the time. The pain did not go away, and I could not afford to pursue it. I worked in much pain for a year when I got insurance I went to the Doctor, CT showed a 14 mm stone in ureter. When they tried to do ESWL it was too infected had to put a stent in and put me on antibiotics to reduce the inflammation before proceeding. I ended up in the ER again, with excruciating pain, my right kidney was stopped up by the stone. I spent a week in the hospital on IV fluids, and medicine. The Doctor did the ESWL to a supposed success.
The pain did not subside (the pain is and has always been in the same place,it is not as intense as the pain that lands me in the ER). My Doctors ran all the tests to try to find the source of the pain (gallbladder, liver, upper&lower intestine, renal, and genealogical). The only thing that they found is a 5 mm stone in the kidney. All the doctors say that a stone in the kidney does not cause pain. I have been going to see a pain management Doctor for about 5 months now. I also had to quit work. I found a urologist who would do ESWL on the stone in my kidney, although he does not think it is the source of my pain. With my past history it would have gotten bigger and got stuck in my ureter. I had the surgery last week so far it has not worked. I go back in a week to get a follow up X-ray. One of my past Doctors said I had IBS, I disagreed I think he wanted to put a name to my pain (he was a Gastroanologist). I think my Doctors do not take me seriously, I know something is wrong and it is scary and frustrating. I am 33, and have two boys (8 & 12) who need me. I still do my housework, supper and help with thier homework. Some days less gets done than others do to all of this. I am blessed with an understanding and helpful boyfriend. I can only hope that someday they will find the problem. I know it is not all in my head. I know what pain is (I have a high talerance) both boys were delivered without any medicine, I did not take any medicine after thier birth, and the stones that got stuck were large ones and I worked a long time without pain meds bfore they were dissolved. Just know you are not the only one.
