Sudden & complete body weakness/paralysis

Every so often I experience a sudden and complete paralysis that renders me ineffective until the weakness spell has left. The time frame can last from anywhere between 2 minutes to 45 minutes. I know when this is going to happen because I get a chlorine smell that makes me feel like I've been in a swimming pool, once I smell that chlorine it's strenuous to talk, slurred speech, and sudden limb failure. In my mind I can move but once I try to actually move I can't. I've told doctors about this and they always tell me to come to the emergency room when it's happening, but that's nearly impossible beacuse by the time I get there the symptoms would be over with. It's been happening since I was eleven years old, and I'm 28 years old now. And as far as I recall no one knows what causes this, and I'm desperate for some answers to this mystery. If there is anyone who may know what this is please contact me A.S.A.P. thanks.

  • Have you been checked for Periodic Paralysis. Normally if it is Periodic Paralysis, the Docs will put you in a special diet, and some medication to try to prevent the paralysis. Hope this helps.:)

  • I just googled this topic to see if there was anything relating to my own experiences with sudden odors of chlorine. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. My episodes don't coincide with any other experiences, though. There are simply rare moments when I suddenly smell the incredibly strong smell of chlorine, as if a bubble just burst in my upper nasal cavity. I get the smell, but no other adverse affects. If anyone has a clue as to what could cause this, I'd love to hear about it.

They havent happened for many years (im 30, male) but seemed to happen a bit in my teen years, then again in my mid 20s at a much lesser frequency. Today, I think this freeze-spell has occurred once in the past year... But it never occurs during waking hours, only if I happen to wake during sleep, and I find myself laying in bed, staring into space, mentally conscious, but I cant move or speak. I would try to rouse myself into mobility by slowly wobbling myself, and I would always eventually "break free". I did figure out what this phenomenon is termed a few years ago, but I have since forgotten :( "Night terrors"? I think that might be it, but thats why the WWW and wikipedia exist. Well I hope you can deal with this.

  • Have you found a cause?Do you get tired, just before an attack and the cholrine smell? Then wake up during the attack, aware of everything but unable to do anything?Today is my aniversary. I've been without a diagnosis for a year. Woot.-Mandy
