i am a 37 year old male cyclist/athlete for 26 yrs. i don't smoke, drink coffee or soda and have never been on meds. i've had diarrhea since April 2006. at first my stools were loose (in particles) for wks, now they're formed but soft (thanks to supplements from my Holistic Dr), but it looks unhealthy. my stomach hurts often in the upper left quadrant at rib cage (like a broom handle poking me). my stomach burns at times and feels like it contains a thick, oozing liquid. i don't think my body is processing food correctly. i am sometimes weak/fatigue and have trouble sleeping. its been a roller coaster ride with symptoms.. things come and go. things are not improving.. they seem to be more apparent and constant.

my GI Dr put me on Pentasa (20Dec06) to treat as if I had Crohn's. there were no changes after 27 days so i stopped taking it. Here's an overview of the last 9 months or so (testing began in Sep06):

doctors: GP, 2 GI, Infectious Disease, Endocrinologist, Allergist, Neurologist. i'm seeing a GI Dr at Cedars Sinai on 20Feb.

tests: multiple blood & stool, upper GI series, ct scan, endoscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, hydrogen-methane breath test. i'm having a myography 29Jan. all tests were normal including (h.pylori, celiac, c.diff, etc). biopsies negative on 5 small ulcers they think they're from NSAIDS (altho i had very few since Apr06, and i had MANY in Nov05 for broken foot).

meds: Pentasa 500mg for 27 days (did nothing). i took Prilosec during the day for 3 wks and Zantac at night for 4 wks in DEC/JAN (did nothing). 1 tab of Effexor (37.5).. multiple side effects within 1 hr, stopped taking.

recent surgery: broken foot Nov05, attempted removal of screw in foot Jul06, shoulder Oct06.

i'm at the end of my rope and the doctors are telling me it's "ALL IN MY HEAD" and they want to treat me for depression (altho i don't show signs). i said what the ***l.. and the Neuro Dr gave Effexor (37.5mg). i had a reaction in the first hour and multiple side effects for the next 72 hrs! 1 tab is all it took for me to realize antidepressant medication wasn't for me. but this is what the doctors had been talking me into for weeks.. i caved b/c i was willing to try anything since tests were coming back normal and these doctors were no longer taking me serious. where should i go from here? PLEASE RESPOND if you have any ideas, suggestions or comments, thanks!

i'm going to post this in the Gastro and Allergy/Immune sections as well..

  • me too. I have been to the doctor more times then I think a 60+ year old or something and I am only 25 years old/female. 1.Allergies, 2.balance disorder since high school (which they are convinced is depression OR ear infection). I have a heart problem where my heart skips sometimes but they said its not a big deal , just have to take some antibiotics before I have dental procedures so I don't get my blood all messed up or something. I have had to have part of my cervix removed beccause of HPV and possible cervical cancer so they wanted to make sure. I have been through alot of tests. blood tests, chest x rays, psyhical therepy for my "balance disorder" which was really costly so I had to stop going. I had mono last year for three weeks (sucked big time). My throat and tongue hurts every other day now for no reason that they can explain to me so I take advil like all the time and they say nothing is wrong with me just to wash my mouth out and gargle with mouthwash all the time ? okay, so I guess my point is doctors try to blame everything on depression and hypocondria (can't spell) but I am not making things up and I am not imagining things so I don't get it. I do suffer from anxiety and depression so maybe that makes things worse but I still dont get why doctors always think it's in your head. I don't want to have medical problems?

Ney.I was wondering if you were taking pain killers or antibiotics during the time of your operations. Those things are dangerous and increase intestinal permeability. How much animal protein do you consume? If you do consume milk, wheat and sugar, the elimination of them may help you reverse some of the symptoms.I am sure your doctors are not familiar with Intestinal Toxemia, Intestinal Permeability, Toxic Overload, and Candida Overload. Don't lose hope. You are not alone.

  • i too have a heart murmur.. most athletes do (especially cardio specific - runners, cyclists, etc). had all heart tests.. all negative/normal (2001, 2005, 2006). the '05 Dr wanted me to take Antibiotic prior to dental work.. the '06 Dr said it wasn't necessary so i don't know who to believe! my resting HR is about 46 BPM and i train between 140-175 BPM.i have a HIGH tolorence for pain.. i went 19 days on a broken foot before i sought medical attention. thought i had another sprained ankle but found out my rolled ankle broke my foot and a screw was needed to repair (Jones Fracture). i only took Ibuprofen (Advil) during that time (at least 110 tabs). the doc prescibed 800mg Ibuprofen and Antibiotics (i thnk) after surgery. don't believe i took much of the 800mg. also had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted at once on Local Anaesthesia and very few pain killers.many times i don't fill the prescriptions and just use OTC 200mg ibuprofen. i have never taken any other pain killer other than Ibuprofen (altho i've been prescribed Vicoden, Tylenol w/ Codeine, . i prefer to FEEL the pain in order see where i'm at with healing.i am 165 lbs, very happy with my life and in excellent health (aside from my stomach/stool issues). i've been riding/racing bicycles off-road nearly all my life and have suffered several injusries along the way (mostly sprains, strains, bruises, lacerations and bone chips).i just bought some Tumeric (natural herb) and will give that a test drive until it's gone. I figure i have nothing to lose.. especially at $8 pound. i'll certainly get back to everyone if i see any changes whatsoever.

  • Did the doctors check you for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). There isnot a test for this. I have it. It's where the body starts rejecting food or any solids taken in. The solids automatically turns into liquids, because the body cannot digest it propery. Then it can even turn into constipation at times. IBS is common is your digestive system starts to breakdown. Ask your GI about IBS. Hope you get some answers.
