I woke up late at night 3 days ago with intense pain in my left shoulder. It lasted about 4 hours and subsided for the rest of the day. However, it occurred a second night without relief from asprin or hot/ice compresses. Last night I was again woken with this pain and now it has lasted through the day. it is radiating through my arm into my hand, making it painful for me even hold a cell phone. It occasionally is just dull pain, but unrelated to movement of my arm. Also I am 19 years old and have no prior injuries nor am I involved in athletics. I plan on going to the doctor tomorrow if it continues, but I would like feedback for now!

  • Hi, I am a physical therapist. I would guess that you have an issue with your neck. Most often symptoms that radiate down from your shoulder to your hand is nerve related. I would apply ice to your neck (not shoulder) 10 minutes at a time a few times a day. Take anti-inflammatory medication on a regular basis. Finally watch your posture. Your position while you are sleeping might be the reason your nerve is getting pinched. Good luck. ~JTrempe PT, ATC http://www.joint-pain-solutions.com
