I am 21 years old and have very severe joint pain. it started 7 months ago and has progressivley gotten worse. It started in my knees and is gradually moving to other joints in my body. It is not an aching pain but more of a stabbing and crippling pain. It half kills me to walk up and down the stairs and to stand up and sit down. It is affecting my quality of life, and having two young children doesn't allow for time to just sit around. I went to the doctors and they did blood tests and everything is normal. I was perscribed naproxen which is a perscription grade Aleve, an anti-inflammitory, but the doctor said i had no inflammation. I am extremely frustrated with the fact that i have no recieved any pain relief at all. The doctor said that Naproxen would help alieviate some of the pain and that i could take it with tylonol. well 2 weeks later, and after taking two naproxen a day with 6 tylonol, nothing. Now the pain is affecting my sleep and wakes me up at all hours of the night. I want to ask her for a stronger pain killer, but i dont know if she will give it to me. I also took glucosomine for about 7 weeks and that is suppose to help with arthritis, but yet again, no effect at all.

I have never had any joint injuries and i am now starting to worry that it is something serious. I just dont know how much longer i can live with this pain. I feel like i am the only person in the world that has pain like this with no explination.

  • I have a similar problem, joint pain through out body which originated in my wrists, although it seems that you are suffering worse than I did. It would probably be worth seeing the doctor again and insisting on some pain killers - if not more tests - if you are struggling to cope this badly something else definately needs to be done.

Then i asked her if there is a chance that it could just e regular arthritis and she said there is always that chance, but at my age she would be VERY surprised (emphasis on the very). Hearing things like that just make me worry even more that it is something far more serious. hopefully i will be able to make it to a specialist soon, but who knows.....

  • You all are not alone, I have similar problems! I have seen a specialist in rheumatology and she can't find a label for it: low intense back pain, but worse, severe migrating pain in many of my joints randomly - with NO swelling. Many tests have come up negative. I have had two bouts of Reactive arthritis from food poisoning, but that was over 10 years ago. Not fibro, chronic fatigue, rheumatoid, lupus or lyme. so frustrated and discouraged as you all seem to be. There must be something causing this, I am convinced the pain is real and we are not crazy!!! Does anyone else have similar joint pain without swelling. Thanks!Keep on keeping on :)

  • Hi, I am a physical therapist. There are a lot of auto-immune diseases that could be the underlying cause of multiple joint pain. A rheumatologist is the best way to go. Unfortunately it is often a process of ruling out as opposed to finding a test that clearly identifies the problem. Anti-inflammatories generally help but if one is not working for you, consider asking for another. For example, if Naproxen isn't working ask for Celebrex. Doing easy exercise is sometimes helpful, especially water exercise. I would also recommend avoiding any heat but instead apply ice to painful joints. Hope this helps in any way. Keep searching for a doctor that finds the answer. ~JTrempe PT, ATC http://www.joint-pain-solutions.com

  • Hey, I'm only 23...have had joint pain for 2-3 years now...started in my knees...then my hands....and now I have rheumatoid arthritis. Get the blood test(s) and see the doctor.
