Severe sciatica SOLVED (for me at least)

I had severe, debilitating sciatica for four years. Every morning I would feel o.k., but if I bent over to pick anything up off the floor, I would be in horrible pain within two hours. If I continued to ignore the pain and do anything but go lie down, I would be unable to walk by evening. I couldn't work. I couldn't clean house. I was miserable.

About a year ago, a diabetic friend of mine was staying at my house. He insisted that he check my blood sugar when I was very irritable (a regular occurrence) one morning before eating. I had a fasting blood sugar of 110. Not terribly high, but cause for concern. I went to the doc, confirmed a pre-diabetic condition, and started paying attention to what I ate and my blood sugar.

When my blood sugar came down THE SCIATICA DISAPPEARED!!!!! This was a HUGE problem for me...I had been told for YEARS by docs, physical therapists, and chiropractors that there was nothing wrong with my back. When I don't pay attention to what I eat, and my blood sugar gets higher...the sciatica comes back!

If you are having problems with sciatica, get your fasting blood sugar tested.... It can't hurt and apparently, even slightly high blood sugar can cause problems for some people.

I'd like to see if anyone else had the same problems I did. There's a bunch of complaining and questions on this forum, but not many "My problem went away posts"

  • yep - I had the same experience - totally debillitating sciatic pain - and trouble controlling one of my legs. My blood sugar tested fine but I totally cut sugar out of my diet (along with chemical sugar substitutes) as an experiment cause I had some other symptoms that seemed diabetic. The sciatic pain and weird leg thing went away almost immediately and comes back only when I eat sugar.

  • I've been doing a low-carb diet for over 2 years. Whenever I "fall off the wagon" and start eating sugar again, my sciatica flares up almost immediately.

  • that is also my experience. I totally agree, sugar will send up a flare in my sciatica.
