Radiating pain from sprained ankle--normal?

I fell on my ankle 3 days ago, went to the doctor immediately and was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. Since then, I have been resting, icing, and using NSAIDs. I have been wearing an aircast and using crutches when moving around. The swelling is mostly gone and there is much less bruising, but I still cannot put weight on the foot without severe pain. Also, the pain is now radiating up my calf and hamstring, whether I'm moving or at rest. Is it normal to have this pain 3 days after injury, or should I go back to the doctor?

  • It's not normal to have pain radiating up your leg from a sprained ankle. You must have suffered some other trauma elsewhere. Go back and see your doctor.
