Muscle Pain - Especially Neck and Shoulders

For a while now I have neck pain with shoulder and upper back pain. I can feel the muscles in my neck and shoulder to be very tight. I have noticed that taking meds like Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, do nothing to relieve the pain. If I take something that relaxes the nerves like Klonopin or a sleeping pill (Lunesta), I feel better while the drug is in effect but I actually feel much worse after its wears out. For example if normal pain/siffness level is 5, if I take Lunesta the it can go down to 2 but the next day the pain level is 8-9.

Note: I think I have muscle tightness all over (e.g., calves, lower back) but it is the neck, and shoulders that I notice the most.

Any suggestions?

  • I get extremely bad back and shoulder pain when I am stressed out. Could stress be the problem? If it is your whole body, I would consider doing some stretches to loosen the muscles. Hold the stretches for 30 seconds and make sure that you are feeling mild discomfort with the stretch, but NOT pain as that will cause the muscle to stay tense.
