Late June Started having slight right knee problems, struggled when trying to get into back of car, noticed some pain after one cycle ride.
22nd July Morning – Went to general doctor complaining of pain when bending right knee, and slightly enlarged joint, told to take ibuprofen for a week (1200mg/day), and after have an x-ray.
Evening – When to emergency department as knee cap area was very enlarged, and I was unable to bend past 80º. Told was an effusion with around 80ml of fluid. X-ray taken of right knee, nothing abnormal observed.
1st August Right knee was now enlarged, but not as severely.
8th August Prescribed diclofenac sodium (150mg/day) for one week.
11th August Blood taken to test for rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
20th August Blood test results: Rheumatoid factor: normal; auto-immune factor: normal; serum urate: normal; serum c-protein levels: normal; blood count: normal. Referral to musculoskeletal made.
20th September Left knee started becoming painful when fully bending.
22nd September Saw musculoskeletal doctor. Accounted right knee problems to a tendonitis, and left knee pain to posture issue. Started physiotherapy, saw initial improvement in bending of knee, but then no further improvements made.
27th September Left knee was now size of right knee (it did not go ‘very large’ like right knee did on 22nd July).
3rd November Due to spreading to left knee, saw general doctor who suspected it was chondromalacia patella (patellofemoral syndrome). Prescribed diclofenac sodium (150mg/day) for two weeks (did not take).
3rd December Couldn’t fully clench left fist, and painful when I tried to do so.
8th December General doctor suspected I have rheumatoid arthritis. Referred to rheumatologist.
11th December Noticed small lumps appeared on left hand around joint above knuckle when fist was clenched. First lump vanished, replaced with pain in finger. Since then further have formed. They seem to be the same colour as the rest of the hand until clenched, when they go red, and fingers go white.
Around same time, I noticed knee swelling was subsiding slightly.
16th December Couldn’t fully clench right fist, and painful when I tried to do so.
19th December Small red lump appeared on right hand (index finger).
