Femur fracture with compression plate

I broke my femur in Oct of '10. It's been almost 7 months. I still get a lot of pain when I walk and have been in PT for the last few months. Due to the way it was broke, I had to get a long plate instead of a rod. Not sure if the recovery is quicker with a rod but I feel like I'm going so slow!
Anyone else have pain so much later? (it feels like the top screw is poking me constantly and that is almost getting WORSE as I get stronger)

  • Hi, I am a physical therapist. Some times plates do not do as well as rods. I have had a number of patients that have had femur fractures with plate fixations that later had to have revisions secondary to continued pain. At 7 months you should not be in much pain. If the symptoms persist and your surgeon does not offer answers I would recommend obtaining a second opinion. Hope this helps. ~JTrempe PT, ATC http://www.joint-pain-solutions.com

  • Thanks. I think at this point I'm considering waiting the 12 mos necessary and getting all the hardware removed... and moving forward from there. I'm 5'9 and 135 so wonder if my thin frame can't support the plate and the 15 screws.. I appreciate your response.
