I'm a 39 year old woman who has always been very athletic. Until april of 08 I been rock climbing and playing beach volleyball. In april I started having severe rib pain that seems to move around. It has been diagnosed as Costochondritis by Kaiser. But its now september and hurts just as bad. Bad enough where its almost debilitating. My lifestyle has completely changed to where I don't even attempt to work out anymore in any capacity. My mother had a similar affliction for may years that we all just thought she was making it up. This is horrible like having a broken rib but I don't. There seems to be no treatment for costochondritis other than wait until it goes away. But I've had it so long I wonder if that is really what I have. And with my mother having a similar thing is there such a thing as chronic costochondritis? I'm going to chiropractor this week and acupuncture next week. **** I would go to a witch doctor if it would help. Is there anything else this could be?

  • Do you have pain when you take a breath or cough? If not, I doubt it's costochondritus. Have you had an ultrasound of the area? Maybe kidney or gall bladder? I have similiar pain except I also have excruciating pain in breast as well. I am still undiagnosed, going on a year and half. I would recomend going to a neurologist if you have any numbness however.

  • My rib pain started in July of this year.I asked my OB/GYN to check with ultra sound because the first symptom felt like something growing, little vibrations of a quirky type that just didn't belong..That's the best I can describe the onset. The ultrasound showed nothing. We ignored it because ribs don't change.Needless to say it morphed from small vibes to all out chronic pain in 2 months. My left lower rib cage became distorted. The better part of 5inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall protrude about an inch out form under the usuall space. The last MD I saw was a Pulmonologist. He diagnosed Chosto (sp) also.He put me on Indomethacain x3 daily for 5 days. Then repeated prescription when it failed to produce results first go round. He also prescribed Lyrica 25mg at bedtime while on for pain.I finished 3 days ago.Have not had chronic pain in rib for 3 days.Put can feel slightest pull, like it may come back.Could be just fear, time will tell.Distortion of rib cage did not change or receede. He said it is probably calcification and will never do so.I'm not sure about the ending diagnosis, but will accept if pain does not come back.Which he said may or may not.Good luck with diagnosis.P.S.I still have what feels like a wobbly chest diaphram that feels like it's been pulled tight,I know sounds strange but it started the whole mess.......
