Have had pain in back upper back that radiates around to the chest and down arms. Can't sleep or sit properly for 2 months. DR thought it was knotted muscles - muscle relaxers and pain medications do not help. Have lost weight and losing appetite. Was a heaving smoker, am diabetic and have had 3 heart attacks.

  • Hi, I am a physical therapist. I would first be concerned that you might have referred pain, either from your heart or lungs. I would hope your doctor might give you a complete check up to clear these areas. If it is not heart or lung related, pain radiating into the mid back and arm could also be referred from your neck. After getting your heart checked out I would then consider an orthopedic doctor who can evaluate this potential. In the mean time, watch any postures or positions that aggravate the pain and start applying ice (no heat!) to your lower neck region, 10 minutes at a time a few times a day. Hope this helps. ~JTrempe PT, ATC http://www.joint-pain-solutions.com

  • You could have a pinched nerve in your spinal column. That's kind of what it sounds like to me. I had a bulging discs in my back about 10 months ago, and it was pretty intense pain. I had shoulder pain, back pain, and my thigh hurt. Or you could have a herniated disc, and there is a difference between those and bulging discs. I just read about them at http://www.northwestspineclinic.com/resources/common-conditions/#c-14I hope this link helps and you experience some relief. Life is no fun with any type of pain.
