I have really red sore skin in the corners of my mouth and underneath my bottom lip. Nothing the doctor has given me has worked atall. I've used 3 different anti fungal creams and hydrocortizone. I use vaseline to stop my lips feeling really tight but the skin tends to flake and looks awful.

The dr sent me for a blood test to see if anything shows up there but i'm waiting for the results.

Can anyone help, this is really getting to me, I feel so self concious.

  • You haven't updated your results, I'd be curious because I have had the same ongoing redness around the lips and it comes and goes. I tried anti-fungal cream which seemed to inflame it more as soon as I applied it. The thing that has worked over a period of five days or so, calming down the redness: is regular anti-biotic creams to relieve it, like Bacitracin or any generic brand. I was diagnsoed with oral lichen planus 2 years ago and think it may have now decided to appear outside my mouth, and not just inside. I think it is sytemic in me. It's embarassing to be looked at like leper for about a week running, knowing it's not contagious...I try not to go anywhere in public,, like eating at a diner for fear people will think I'm a walking disease. My doc said we have these things inside us sometimes since birth and they flare up when our bodies may become diabetic, fatigued, stressed etc. Who the heck really knows. But I think these problems are more wide-spread and simply are ignored in general by the medical field. If something doesn't kill us, they hand you a cream, and never a good cure here in the USA. More money can be made in creams than in cures. Many of these things are various levels of herpetic viruses.. that is what lichen planus is, why not just call it what it is. I'm also told it's not contagious, my mate is happy to know that. They never tell you there are dozens of herpetic viruses that can harbor in our bodies that keep coming back time after time. I think the baby boomers are in for a big surprise when they see these viruses popping out all over their lips and mouths. • I sure hope you receive this reply as I think it will help you. I think I had (have) exactly what you are talking about. It took over 15 years and a deployment to Iraq to get a diagnosis. I "lucked out" to get a break out during the same time a dermatologist was deployed. He knew exactly what is was the instant he walked in the room. He diagnosed it as Perioral Dermatitis. I have researched it and to be honest, my rash didn't really look like the pictures shown. Mine looked more like an isolated sunburn right around my lips. However, a quick treatment can be steroid pills/cream but not good for the long term. The best treatment is doxycycline. An old antibiotic that supposedly has the only element in it to treat this irritation. After taking the pills regularly each flare up, (about 10 days worth per time) I think it has finally been subsided. I can not recall the last time I had a flare up. I still have a stash of pills though just in case. Good luck!! I have really red sore skin in the corners of my mouth and underneath my bottom lip. Nothing the doctor has given me has worked atall. • I have this same problem and have used various treatments including a steroidal dental paste, anti-fungals and anti-yeast medication, and finally methotrexate. Each treatment helps, none cures. I've changed toothpaste and don't use anything else on my skin. No update since 2009? Can anyone help?
