Gum ulcers and Severe Dry Cough for months after quitting smoking!!!

Why is it that for months after I quit smoking, that I had the most horrible case of ulcers on upper and lower gums and below my tongue. Also a horrible dry cough. These lasted for months until I eventually started smoking again. I want to quit, but I fear the side effects again.
