Constant bitter taste on tongue

I have had a bitter taste on my tongue for the past week. It is particularly noticeable when I eat anything - everything tastes bitter. Sometimes it feels like it is waning, but it never completely disappears, and can get bad at any point of the day or night. It is right in the middle of my tongue.
Sometimes i have the sensation as though i have burnt it (bit sore, rough feeling - i can't remember if I actually burnt it), but there is nothing visible on my tongue, and have been advised to brush it and use mouthwash, but with no change. I am in my twenties, and have been diagnosed with IBS, but I don't know if this is relevant. I eat a normal healthy diet.
Any advice much appreciated.

  • I just saw your post. Do you continue to have this problem? The same thing just started with me. The taste is from the middle of my tounge back. It gets worse when I eat anything. It suppresses my appetite (not an altogether bad thing!) and ruins the taste of anything I am eating. I just started all of sudden two days ago, and has been ever-present since.

  • Me too! I have had a bitter taste in my mouth for the past 3 days and its driving me nuts.. Everything tastes bitter and it ruins all my meals. Do you guys have asthma? I think it may be because of the Primatene Mist I have been taking! Do you guys take that too?

  • Have you been eating anything with Pine Nuts in it? Eating Chinese pine nuts has been known to leave people with a bitter taste in their mouths for days. Research it for yourself, people are calling it "pine mouth". I hope this helps.

I've sortof got a coated slimy feel towards the back of my mouth and tongue that I can't clear out, and it kindof hurts a bit, like there are a bunch of little cuts or scratches at the back of my tongue/mouth. I'm also suspecting primatine mist. Trying a few days without to see if that's the problem. Sortof paranoid that I've got some kind of oral cancer.

  • I have been experiencing a bitter tase especially towards the back of the tongue when i eat something. I have had pine nuts in the last few days so perhaps the suggestions linked to pine nuts could be true. Only started today - will keep an eye on it and see what happens - good luck

  • this is why the internet is so brilliant.. I've had this same weird bitter taste in my mouth for the last week and it has been freaking me out because all of the sudden my knee and ankle have been hurting also! I just thought it was because i'm turning 30 soon!! haha..and also because i had a questionable "adult encounter" =T ... BUT, my cousin cooked me dinner with part of the recipe being PINE NUTS! lots of pine nuts! And i've been eating the leftovers for a week now! I kinda thought it had something to do with that but wasn't sure.. Anyway,, there are still some leftovers and they are delicious so i'm going to deal with the lingering bitterness on account of my craving for the tasty morsels! Hopefully this is all of your solutions also! .............. (i guess i won't know that it's my solution till i stop eating the stuff,, but i'll keep my fingers crossed)

  • But I haven't eaten pine nuts (I think they're disgusting) and this bitter taste is driving me crazy. It just started today. I thought my sour cream had expired because it tasted so horrible, but now I'm eating spaghetti and the sauce is just rancidly acidic and bitter. But my brother is eating it just fine, with no problem at all, and says there's nothing different. This is almost unbearable, every time I eat something the back of my tongue just lights up with this awful awful taste. What is a non-pine nuts cause of this kind of thing??

  • Indeed it is, surely, at least in part, pine nuts. Vigilant with my foods, most grown or caught (fresh fish myself) I had been frequently, of recent times, bbq 'roasting the fish in foil with fresh greens, olive oil, butter, ginger, tumeric, and herbs etc., and a bulk of Pine Nuts. Yes, delicious
