At age 5 my son was diagnosed ADHD he has been treated with medications for 6 years now. He is currently taking Aderall XR 30mg/Trileptal 300mg/seroquel 500mg/Trazadone 100mg a day.The medications were doing fine but for the past month have had little or no effect on him. His Dr now says that he may have severe Bipolar Disorder.
She suggested that we may have to use Lithium. He is now 10 and I heard that it is not good to use on a child under 12. Does anyone have a child under 12 who is currently on Lithium? If so how is it working? I have heard a lot of pros and cons but I dont want to harm my son but if he is not treated Im afraid he may hurt himself or others.

  • Lithium sounds scary and alittle overkill for a childWhat are the longterm effects? Poor guy. I hate to hear it..What about Lamictal? What about other meds? What about a 2nd opinion? Good luck!

  • You should investigate more natural ways to help your son. Orthomed.com, Dr.Hoffer, the yahoo group-schitzophrenia and vitamins - check it outIt is way too easy for the Drs. to write perscriptionsRead books:Mad in AmericaBlame it on the BrainYour Drug May Be Your Problemand I'm sure there are some about children and the whole idea about food allergies, etc. It's the easy way out to give a drug and alter a child's development

  • Do not give your child drugs- the damage can be irreversible. Try to work a plan with the doctors for him to be put off the medications in a safe manner.Do not give him milk or juice, sugars, and pastries- they are toxic and bad for everyone. Many kids with diagnosis like your child show dramatical improvement by changing diet. A child showed improvement by simply eliminating milk and bottle juice. In the other hand, he needs a high quality vitamin/mineral supplement. All of these claims are documented on a book I recently read: "Never Be Sick Again", by Raymond Francis ( a doctor in Chemistry from MIT).I know it sounds like i am pushing this book- but the information in it is not available online. You can get some hints and articles on the website Beyondhealth.comThe book explains that there is only one sickness: cell malfunction, and there are only to causes: cell deficiency or toxicity. Your child does not have to be sick. There is hope.

  • Seroquel is an antipsychotic. I was told I had Bipolar Disorder too and was given Seroquel (15mg) and felt awful, like a zombie...I can only imagine how your child must feel being on 500 mg of it. If he has ADHD, there is no reason to take Seroquel, and if your doctor's are now suspecting Bipolar...I'd chalk it up to the medicines. Get a second opinion...those drugs are powerful, be careful.

  • Ther are many safer NATURAL OR HOLISTIC ALTERNATIVES OUT THERE!!! Toxic drugs build TOXIC bodies and minds!!! The MDs tried to get me to put my son on that crap for ADD or ADHD and we refused it til the end. Ended up he had FOOD ALLERGIES. Simple as that. Dairy was the worst one. He would drink milk or have too much cheesy stuff and like clockwork- within 30 to 60 minutes- he would either get violent and/or cry. He could never explain why- he said it just made him "feel bad" like that. Next was SUGAR. It was easy for me to monitor his diet however, his father's house was a different story. They all ate candy, cookies, whatever and whenever and drank soda 24/7. (My exhusbands wife's 2 kids were ADD/ADHD and had "special needs for learning". IMAGINE THAT!) Daniel's (my son) teachers would call me up and tell me to come get my kid cause he was too disruptive (constantly sharpening pencils, drumming on desks, getting up and walking around class, clearing throat). After a bit of detective work- a few of the teachers and I figured out HE ONLY HAD BAD DAYS AFTER BEING AT HIS DADS FOR WEEKEND OR THE NIGHT.!!! Sometimes it would take 2-3 days before the "buzz" wore off and he behaved normal again. His father was told of this but never believed it and continued to not monitor or restrict his foods for some time. :( Eventually though, even he saw the difference in behavior and worked with me and not against me. Point is- I NEVER BOUGHT INTO THE MEDS THING AND HE OUTGREW HIS FOOD ALLERGIES and he is now a calm, rational young adult. He does show some damage from all the high fat, high sugar yeasty junk food and drinks he ate as a kid i.e. IBS, and some other colon/rectal problems that he's keepin an eye on. I saw what the Ritalin, etc. did to his step sister and now she's a "zombie". Won't work, can't seem to motivate and she is always having problems with one addiction or another. (She takes alot of pain pills/ xanax, soma.) She doesn't feel "right" unless she's on something! There are so many kids out there startin young on a life-time dependency on pills. From the cradle to the grave!!! Please, check out other options and God bless!

  • Natural remedies for bipolar disorder? Sorry guys, but that would work for only very mild cases, at the most. If her doctor is diagnosing the kid with SEVERE bipolar disorder, then it's probably very serious. Obviously lithium would be a last resort for a child, but if there's no medicine left to try... I have bipolar disorder, and until I went on lithium, my mental health was horrible and out of control, even with therapy. Medicine and therapy are the best treatments for severe mental illness, not eliminating milk from your diet. The long term use of lithium can cause kidney damage; as a result, the patient must have blood tests every six months (and more when first taking it). My little brother had bipolar disorder, too, and he committed suicide two years ago as a result of inept psychiatric treatment and because my parents let him stop taking his meds.

  • IT IS DEFINITELY WAY TOO EASY FOR ALOT OF THESE DOCTORS TO JUST WRITE A PRESCRIPTION FOR DRUGS. IT IS THE ANSWER FOR EVERYTHING! ADD, ADHD, - JUST MEDICATE THEM SO THEY ARE COMPLACENT AND DOCILE. CONTROL THE MASSES W/ DRUGS AND CHEMICALS. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE LONG TERM EFFECTS ON THE PATIENTS. OR THE WAY THEIR CREATIVE ABILITY IS SNUFFED OUT OR HOW THEY BECOME LETHARGIC/CATATONIC!!! THEN- IF THEY NEED TO CAME BACK UP- WELL THERE'S DRUGS FOR THAT TOO!!! ADERALL, ETC. WHEN MY SON WAS A TEEN- I WOULD OVERHEAR SOME OF THE KIDS TALK AND SO MANY WERE ON DRUGS- LEGAL MIND YOU. THEY WOULD TELL MY SON HOW GREAT THEY FELT ON THIS ONE OR MIX IT WITH THAT ONE. THEY WERE QUITE ADEPT AT MAKING PRESCRIPTION COCKTAILS!!! WELL, MY SON DIDN'T GO THAT ROUTE AND TO DATE OVER 6 OR 7 OF HIS CLASSMATES HAVE OVERDOSED AND DIED! ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM FROM LEGALLY PRESCRIBED "MEDICINE". JUST ABOUT ALL THE FEMALES HE KNEW ARE ON XANAX OR PROZAC OR SOMETHING. MY STEP SON'S WIFE AND THE MOTHER OF HIS CHILD FELL INTO THE DRUG WORLD AFTER PAIN MEDS WERE GIVEN TO HER FOR A BACK PROBLEM. I TOLD HER SHE WOULD GET HOOKED- SHE SAID "NOPE. NOT ME." SHE STARTED WITH LORTABS THEN WHEN THEY DIDN'T WORK WENT TO ROXICET. DOUBLED UP ON THEM WHEN THEY FAILED TO TO DO TRICK. EVENTUALLY GOT ON PERCOCET AND WHEN SHE RAN OUT OF THEM (AND SHE ALWAYS DID)- OXYCODONE WAS HER STREET LEVEL SUBSTITUTE. SHE WENT FROM A VERY ORGANIZED, NEAT MOM WHO LOVED TO GO TO THE PARK AND PLAY WITH THE KIDS, ETC. TO A HAGGARD, 20SOMETHING GOING-ON-SIXTY THAT COULDN'T STAND DAYLIGHT. I STOPPED GOING OVER THERE BECAUSE I COULD NOT STAND TO SEE HER LIKE THAT AND LISTEN TO ALL HER DRUG-SEEKING EXCUSES.MY STEP-SON STOOD BY HER AND THEY EVENTUALLY GOT HELP. THE PROBLEM WAS THE SYSTEM-INSURANCE WOULD COVER DRUGS-BUT NOT THERAPY, MASSAGE, VERY LITTLE CHIROPRACTIC VISITS,. SHE COULDN'T EVEN BEND TO PICK UP THE LITTLE GUY OUT OF THE CRIB OR VACUUM W/O PILLS. AND SURGERY WAS OUT WITH A YEAR OLD BOY AND HUSBAND WORKING 60 HOURS A WEEK! SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN ON HER BACK FOR 3 - 6 MONTHS!!! FINALLY, SHE GOT ON A BETTER INSURANCE (THAN THE STATE) AND GOT SOME HELP W/ MASSAGE, PHYSICAL THERAPY AND CHIROPRACTIC, ETC AND GOT OFF THE PILLS. IT TOOK ALMOST 2 YEARS OF DAILY METHADONE CLINIC TO RID HERSELF OF THE DESIRE OR OF THE HORRIBLE WITHDRAWALS FROM THE PAIN MEDS!!! SHE WAS A HYPER CHILD, MEDICATED EARLY! SHE STILL USES NICOTINE AND CAFFEINE TO "CALM HER" BUT THANK GOD SHE ONLY SMOKES OUTSIDE! I STILL SAY, NATURAL IS THE BEST WAY. ST. JOHN'S WORT IS USED IN GERMANY (30 YEARS NOW) FOR TREATING DEPRESSION BUT IT IS LOOKED DOWN UPON HERE IN THE STATES. NOT PROFITABLE ENOUGH? NOT ADDICTIVE ENOUGH? I'M LEARNING ALL KINDS OF WONDERFUL CHINESE HERBS AND FORMULAS TO TREAT MYRIAD OF CONDITIONS AND I WILL PROMOTE THEM WHEN I PRACTICE ACUPUNCTURE IN THE FUTURE. PEOPLE FROM OTHER PLACES ARE MORE OPEN TO ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES AND PREFER THEM. ONE OF MY CLIENTS CAME IN FOR A MASSAGE THE OTEHR DAY AND SHE WANTED 1/2 HOUR MASSAGE AND 1/2 HOUR OF REFLEXOLOGY. SHE HAS THAT DONE IN PARIS (HOME) AND IT HELPS HER STOMACH PROBLEMS JUST FINE!!! I WAS HAPPY TO ASSIST. I DON'T GET MANY CLIENTS/PATIENTS ASKING FOR THAT, I LOVE IT WHEN THEY DO AND IT WORKS!!!:p WE GIVE MEDICAL DOCTORS TO MUCH POWER AND IT'S TIME WE TAKE BACK OUR HEALTHCARE. WELLNESS CARE IS MUCH BETTER THAN ILLNESS CARE!!! SOME OF THEM HAVE THEIR HEARTS IN THE RIGHT PLACE BUT HAVE STRONG PHARMECEUTICAL AND INSURANCE COMPANIES PULLING THEIR STRINGS (AND THEIR POCKETBOOKS)! READ UP ON HEALTHCARE, TREATMENT OPTIONS, PROS AND CONS, ETC. TREAT YOUR BODY AS IS IT WERE A BUSINESS TRANSACTION. YOU WOULDN'T BUY A HOUSE WITHOUT CHECKING OUT AREA, SCHOOL, TRANSPORTATION, CRIME RATE, ETC. TREAT YOUR WELLNESS CARE WITH THE SAME SKEPTICISM AND CAUTION.;) DOCS AREN'T GOD AND ARE CAPABLE OF MAKING MISTAKES. HELP EM TO STAY ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW- GET INVOLVED IN YOUR WELLNESS PLAN. IT'S YOUR BODY!!!

  • Obviously whoever says you can treat bipolar without meds has never lived with a bipolar person. My 11yo son is bipolar and without his meds he is very sad and mad and violent. Discipline doesn't even work until they are on the right meds. NO one should say anything otherwise unless they've been through it!!!!!!

  • I work in mental health in Britain and am very sceptical about a diagnosis of severe bi polar disorder in a child of 11. The meds that he is on are pretty hardcore and some of his behaviours could be caused by them. Please look into other ways of helping your son. Look at his diet, check allergies give him omega 3 and 6. ensure that he has a lot of excercise and is not spending too much time in front of a screen. Help him make friends. Seek family counselling and advice re managing his behaviour and your reaction. Try and find out if he is a child that is stress sensitive and see if there is anything that triggered his symptoms. At his age his brain is still developing and needs training not just meds.My heart goes out to you

  • Also... if the meds ain't working, there's a strong chance that it's because his 'disorder' is psychological rather than a 'medical' condition. in my work I've been alonside many clients who need a good talking therapy not pills.

  • Wow! 500 mg of Seroquel?! I am on 50 mg and can just about function! Obviously, all medications will carry a risk, but there are people that cannot not be on medicine, but lithium in a 10 year old sounds a little scary. I am 23 years old and my doctor said he would use lithium as an absolute last resort. Most drug books advise not to use it in a child under 12, like you said. I would try to get a second opinion.

  • Check out www.cabf.org for info on child bipolar conditions. Contact them by phone if you need to do so; they are very compassionate. Seek a doctor at a university nearest you instead of in town physicians. A highly unstable child is more dangerous than a properly medicated one.

  • "I work in mental health in Britain and am very sceptical about a diagnosis of severe bi polar disorder in a child of 11. The meds that he is on are pretty hardcore "You should start getting rid of the doctor If he did have behavioral problems "which all children do", I could see giving him one medication But not a cocktail of drugs including serequil. Serequil is a drug designed for people with schizophrenia who are hallucinating and hearing voices. Its one of the most power anti psychotics drugs. they do claim it works as a mood stabilizer. Mya dvice would be when you see a doctor, don't exaggerate and or complain unless your sons acting up really bad. The only solution the Dr. Could give is another drug. And remember that kids are always hyper, loud, disruptive, stubborn ect. They're often crying one minute, the next minute superman comes on and their happy.

  • Drugs should be a LAST resort for kids. period. You should explore every other option including alternative medicine before commiting your son to possibly harmful and untested drugs. Since your son is on meds already you MUST look each of them up and check for interactions and side effects. Doctors just don't do this and some side effects are severe. Have you tried alternative approaches? There are lots to choose from. It's worth a shot if your son's symptoms improve. I agree completely with 1111healer. You must look at diet and food allergies/intolerances. Nutritional deficiencies can also cause lots of his symptoms and just aren't fully explored by doctors:Examples: folic acid def. can cause apathy, paranoia, and weaknessB vitamin def can cause dpression, irritability, loss of appetite, insomniamagnesium def can cause anxiety, confusion, hyperactivity, restlessness Also worth looking into: acupuncture, light therapy, cranial sacral therapy. Google this for more info. Please explore all your options in addition to Western treatments. Best wishes,DOM

  • I agree with all the people that are leary about LITHIUM, et al. There are always alternatives to hard core drugs. Also, TRY conversation. Start building up SELF ESTEEM AND CONFIDENCE AND SELF RELIANCE. Sometimes, when a child is told YOU CAN"T BEHAVE or HE NEVER ACTS RIGHT, IT GiVES THEM A CUE-- TO MISBEHAVE!!! Even Negative ATTENTION is STILL ATTENTION!!!! YOUNG ONES DO NOT SEE A DIFFERENCE. This is why there are so many "class clowns" in school. These kids are STARVING for attention. Many of them don't have adequate "INTERACTONS" with adults or other people. tHEY COULD BE propped IN FRONT OF A TELEVIISION AND THAT'S WHERE THEIR SOCIAL IDEAS COME FROM. Look at TV> IDOLIZES TROUBLEMAKERS/BAD BOYS. THEY GET THE GIRLS, EXPENSIVE CARS AND PLENTY OF ATTENTION AND-- RESPECT. This is the image most shows, music videos offer these kids. Young minds are IMPRESSIONABLE!!! Do you complement him when he DOES SOMETHING RIGHT??? Or only draw attention to when HE SCREWS UP??? EVEN GIVING HIM ENCOURAGEMENT FOR TRYING IS USEFUL. KIDS NATURALLY WANT TO PLEASE US- AND WILL IF THEY SENSE IT MATTERS!! This is what worked for me (through all my crazy, manic-depressive years!!!)... Positive affirmations. I AM STRONG. I AM CAPABLE. I AM A SMART, CREATIVE, ETC, ETC. KID. Positive affirmations have been PROVEN to show IMPROVEMENTS in illness, depression, anger issues and EVEN CANCER. AND-- kids show the most improvement why?? Because they can VISUALIZE AND ACTUALIZE (on a cellular level) more freely than baised adults! Do these POSITIVE AFFIRMATONS DAILY and see what happens. I had CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND FIBROMYALGIA YEARS AGO. 3 MDS SAID I'D NEVER WORK AGAIN. hOLISTIC MEDICINE AND AFFIRMATIONS SAVED MY LIFE!!! I STOPPED SAYING "CHRONIC FATIGUE" bOO HOO, and started saying "CURRENT FATIGUE" and eventually said "IM NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY--BUT WELLNESS IS MY TRUE STATE!!!I don't know what did what- but I haven't had CHRONIC ANYTHING OR FIBROxxx for several years now! :D I still have days where I'm down, or sore throat from STRESS, and I REMIND MYSELF "MY TRUE STATE IS WELLNESS AND ANYTHING OTHER THAN THAT CANNOT STAY!!!" I'm a full time student studying for my Doctor of Oriental Medicine degree and I've been a massage therapist 14 years now and my own experience-has helped many people (lots of them that come to me are where I was 15 years ago.) I smile and tell them about POSITIVE CELLULAR AFFIRMATIONS and breathing and MINIMIZING ILLNESS!!! I have assisted many folks BACK to WELLNESS (their Natural God or Goddess Given State of Being! PLease, don't REINFORCE LACK AND LIMITATION BELIEFS instead use the energy to build a new paridigm. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENTS AND AFFIRMATIONS!!!Also - what you put in your body (food, drugs, thoughts- are what fortifies you! Feed your body, mind AND SOUL healthy stuff and grow a healthy life . TOXIC FOODSSTRENGTH AND LIGHT~~;)

  • Many children do have problems that can be addressed with food/allergy/chiropractic/cognitive and behavioral therapies. But to eliminate one approach as "toxic" and another as "all healing" is being just as one sided as a solitary "medication" approach. Bipolar children can be incredibly difficult, violent to others and themselves. Some struggle to sleep, and merely controlling their fears, anxieties, anger, and obsessiveness is all consuming. Some children have extreme reactions/ adverse reactions to medications. This is not to say that medications are inherently bad. Find a doctor who agrees with the adage to "start low (medication level) and "go slow." You sound like you seek a more conservative approach. Remember, many children have their life returned to them when a medication alters their brain to a more functional level. Mothers do not need the burden imposed that they are toxifying the child with medication. The burden of a mentally ill child is unfathomable to those who have not lived it. My heart goes out to you. Playing the blame game and fearing other's reactions will make matters much worse.

  • Well I have been through it! It is not true that natural alternative only work for "mild cases" I have bipolar 1 with psychotic features, and was diagnosed ADHD as a child. Doing it drug free is not easy but it can be done.It requires a very restrictive diet, plus supplements. My regime is Gluten free diet, no dairy other than yoghurt, no sugar, aspartame or msg. Supplements: fish oil (enough to get 1.5gm EPA daily), VitaminC, a multivitamin, a broadbased amino acid supplement, probiotics. Taurine to calm down, tyrosene in the morning for depression if needed. There are many people who use various diets and supplements to manage both ADHD and bipolar. This can help also WITH the psych drugs, often they can be reduced. Not everyone can go totally drug free like me. I take extra taurine if I get irritable or sleepless. If I miss two nights sleep I use psych drugs SHORT TERM.Many people have experimented with various diets and supplements and had success. The docters who prescribe these drug combinations are ALSO experimenting. There is NO long term research,, and especially with children. It is true that people relapse if they don't take meds, but often this is a withdrawal reaction to the drug rather than a symptom of the illness.See:http://psychrights.org/Research/Digest/Chronicity/NeurolepticResearch.htmTry to really educate yourself as widely as possible and remember that there are people out there promoting expensive alternative remedies just to sell their particular product, but you have to experiment to find what works for the individual. As your child gets older you will probably have to face times he will want to stop taking meds, now is the time to research alternatives while he is still young enough to be medicated without consent.Psych drugs are the answer if you are too busy or too lazy to do the hard discipline of diet, I have used them from time to time but am grateful i can live a normal life without drugs and I am NOT a mild case.

  • Kudos to you!!! That was a little harsh--but rang very true!!! They tried that add/adhd crap w/ my son when he was around 12 and through working with his diet (eliminating dairy mainly) and sugar (big trigger too) and tweaking a few things here and there, I'm proud to say -HE NEVER SPENT A DAY ON PSYCH DRUGS!!! He did experiment with street drugs for awhile. We prayed and supported him (sometimes detatching w/ LOVE when he had some life lessons to learn) but HE MADE IT!!! WE MADE IT!!! His half brother and step sister (raised at his Dad's house) ON SUGAR AND SODA AND mCdONALDS OR WHATEVER THEY WANTED --both have the labels ADD ADHD, special learning classes, etc and now as adults, his step sister is addicted to pain pills AND ocassionally does COCAINE. She's been in and out of drug rehabs (age 21) countless times and she lives with her mom cuz "she can't sustain herself". Plus her self esteem and will power has been crushed. She used to be creative and insightful, but after 6-10 years on Ritalin, Adderal, etc. she has no SPARK left. His half brother is ok, average. But no initiative or drive to excel. Lives with mom too. My son works at a trade (granite installer) and he's in a band that is months away from playing local live shows. He's been practicing his guitar since he was 13 on an almost daily basis and it shows! Age 23 now. HE'S PHENOMENAL!!!! Disciplined, dedicated to the band practices and to his family and I can't but wonder WHAT IF>>> What if I PUT HIM ON MOOD ALTERING DRUGS OR LET HIM BECOME DEPENDENT TO CHEMICALS. WOULD HE BE WHERE HE IS IN LIFE (AGE 23) OR WOULD HE BE HIDIN OUT IN THE SPARE ROOM AT HIS DADS TIL HE'S OLD AND HIS DREAMS ARE A DISTANT MEMORY!!! THANKFULLY WE WON'T HAVE TO FIND OUT. I personally have been put on a plethera of meds over the years and NONE EVER WORKED. The last was PAXIL. IT MADE ME SUICIDAL, ANGRY AND VERY AGITATED OVER NOTHING!!! i TAKE NO MORE MEDS. THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN St. Johns Wort (depression) Evening Primrose OIl (mood swings) and some other homeopathics. Meditation, gratitude lists, to do lists, GOALS, healthy lifestyle and food have helped me and I have taken my power back. I don't label myself or pity myself. Also I found I am dehydrated and that makes me cranky- lots of water- a different person. Very little caffeine or sugars (yeast). Works for me!!! One of the side effects I got from anti-depressants (zoloft/Buspar) years ago that is manifesting now is lack of libido and emotions. This is common with RXs and I'm slowly getting it straightened out with Chinese herbs and acupuncture at my school!!! Thank God that's all I lost. Yours in Health and Wellness~~
