Treating somatic symptoms of GAD

Hello-

I posted on the other board awhile back about my problem, but anyways, long story short..

I had a panic attack at school on March 14, and a less serious one the next day. Prior to this I had been drinking for three days straight which may have triggered it. Ever since then, I have had many physical symptoms, such as daily palpitations, loose stool, dypsnea, trembling, etc..

I was diagnosed with GAD and was prescribed Celexa and Buspirone. I take the Celexa everyday (20 mg in the morning), and I take the Buspirone 3 times daily. I have been taking the Celexa for a little over a month now, and it seems that my anxiety and worry over my symptoms is disappearing, and I just started taking the BuSpar a few days ago.

However, my physical symptoms are still present. I did some reading online, and it said that the BuSpar and Celexa are effective in treating the anxiety but not necessarily these somatic symptoms. Would it be worthwhile to ask my doctor about possible taking Benzos for a little bit to clear the symptoms?

I also see the Psychologist for the second time today.

Thanks for all of your help!
Brian

  • Your doctor probably won't want to give you benzos with a drinking history--they only perpetuate the problemThese symptoms should get better over time if you stay off the alcohol. Have you considered going to Alcoholics' Anonymous? You will learn a lot there about the side efects of alcohol. Most alcoholics (up to 2/3) have an underlying anxiety condition, and self-medicate with alcohol. If you can be rigorously honest with yourself, and work to acknowledge the anxiety disorder and deal with it, you can get off the booze and take "life on life's terms." Good luck
