My husband hasn't worked for the past year and is severely depressed. He takes anxiety medication and that seems to help until recently. He's had a loss of appetite, doesn't laugh or smile hardly, says nothing but depressing things that is in his life. I don't know what to do. I've tried to convince him to get help but he thinks that it's all a scam and nobody can help him. It's getting to the point where i can't handle it anymore. I don't want to put our son through it. He's only 15 months old but I don't want him to grow up and be depressed because he saw daddy like that. I've tried to help my husband. I am the only one that works and really cleans the house. He stays up till the morning most of the time drinking, and if he's not drinking then he just stays up on the internet doing nothing. It getting to where i'm even depressed to be around him. I don't know what to do anymore. I need some help.

I wish I would have known at 1 year what I know now. Any one have advice for us? I'd love to know how others cope!

  • Your husband needs to see a psychiatrist, even if he doesn't want to, or think that it will work (you can't say his judgment will be accurate if he's this badly depressed, it distorts his judgment with unnatural pessimism that is unwarranted). If he refuses, you need to speak to a psychiatrist anyway (I'm aware he may be mad if you go and see one behind his back, but I really don't think you have any choice). However, if you're getting depressed too, you may have a valid reason for seeing a psychiatrist yourself. You can always try going to a marriage counsellor first if you don't want to go to a psychiatrist without telling him. A lot of those symptoms sound like what I had when I was severely depressed. Another thing that worries me, he's on meds, and alcohol. Where these meds prescribed by a psychiatrist, or did your husband just go for them himself? I wouldn't touch medication for stuff like this unless a doctor with the appropriate qualifications prescribed them. You will, of course, need to tell any psychiatrist you see about what meds he's been taking, not to mention how much alcohol he's been taking, as well as everything else that's been going on.
