When my son gets sick (age 10), it is usually a fever with no other symptoms. During the night he will wake up and tell me about terrible dreams he is having or that his fingers are all cut short, or that people are 'raw' and all have different flavors. This all scares me because he does not remember this happening, but he is wide awake talking to me and so afraid. I comfort him and tell him things will be all right that he is just having a bad dream again. I am at a loss as to why this happens, and scared for him. He is a sweet loving little boy, but does anyone know why this happens and is it linked to something else? Like I said, it only happens when he is sick with a fever. 100 to 102 degrees. Thankyou.

  • Seems pretty normal for these symptoms to occur when a child or adult is sick. Think about what your body is really doing when you are sick - - all of your systems are basically running on overdrive to control the infection, virus etc. "Bad dreams" often co-occur with fevers.

  • He's not sick all the time, is he? Don't focus on it. Play classical music when he is sleeping when he is sick and his subconscious will go somewhere else. Also, certain meds like Ambien can cause horrible nightmares, so watch what you give him.
