Hi,
I think i started obsessing about my appearance when i was 13, that's as far back as i remember, i began to notice many bad things in my appearance, and i spent most of my time looking in the mirror. I'm now 20. I dropped out of school at 14(home schooled) , and now i need to go to college, but i don't. I'm almost a recluse, and when i go out (very rarely), i am soo conscious i feel like dying. I go to VERY great lengths to avoid people.
My biggest concern is my face size, but there are other things as well. I measure my face size quite often....
I can't socialize at all, and every night i spend the whole night looking in the mirror, i've done this for years. I can't afford surgery. I don't know what to do....i can't live with myself anymore. It's getting worse i think (if it can). If i have to go out i start panicking, i can't stand being around other people and them looking at me. My family is suffering too, i constantly ask them for reassurance, and i'm too dependent on them, I can't live like this anymore....what do i do

However could you write a full list of symptoms, and then write out examples of it? That way we can see everything in case it could be a mixture of two other things. Such as agorphobia and some other disorder. Thanks. David

  • Okay, I go to a special education school. So i have spent the last two years with people who have, ocd, add, aspergers, high functioning autism, executive function disorder, bipolar, and more. I myself have depression, insomnia, social anxiety disorder, and adhd. I also have primary juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome and possibly chronic fatigue syndrome. So just cause I'm fourteen doesnt' mean i haven't been bounced around by doctors, and spent hours trying to figure out what's wrong with me. Just cause I'm fourteen doesn't mean I haven't spent hours on medical sites learning things that you probably don't even know. In addition all my family members are ill. My sister has anorexia, and insomnia also. My mother has fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, addiction, depression, insomnia, and ocd. My dad is ADHD. Okay there's a lot there. I have experience in this area, so how dare you 'roll eyes' when u have no clue about anything about me. I guess all I can say is my entire life has been spent around people who are either severly mentally ill, or ill physically. I myself fit into both those categories. I know things. So get off this site because critizing others who are trying to help isn't what this site is about. Davidmt1P.S. I'm just replying here so people can see that I am qualified. I'm going to create a thread so we don't distract from whomever is trying to get help. It will be this text just copied and pasted.

  • I will repeat davidmt1 is a 14yr boy, I will add, sadly he does have a lot of problems. Being able to access information via the internet does not make one an expert, it just means that you have read a lot of stuff. Being around people with a lot of problems does not make an expert nor does it qualify anyone to try & diagnose either themselves or anyone else. Information does not equal wisdom. Anyone with wisdom will realise that they do not have nor do they know all the answers. Mental illnesses or disorders are complex & can not be broken down & diagnosed in an instant, certainly not via the www. Mental illnesses can & will cause physical symptoms, until mental ilness is addressed the persons physical symptoms will not improve. Mental illnesses is an illness in its own right as is, cancer, diabetis, thyroid problems & so on..... Such disorders & illnesses needs to be dealt with by professional people who also know they do not have all the answers. It is a long process not to be undertaken via the internet. Information in the wrong hands can be very dangerous. Throwing little tantrums & hissy fits again proves nothing.... I would also doubt that the original poster will come back as they are unregistered, but if they do I will repeat, please go to your doctor & get the help you need, as you will not get it here. Best wishes.....:)

  • David have you a problem understanding ? read the above again slowly ! I think we all know what you meant by 'read the above again slowly' and "have you a problem understanding." And in my opinion hitting a 14 year old who has learning problems with that is wrong.  Would you answer my question however? Are you a doctor? What is your specialty? Where did you go to school? Where was you residency? Where was your fellowship? Where are you licensed? Until these questions are I'm not going to stop. If you aren't a doctor, then I should expect an apology for the you are not an expert post. And if you are one I would like to remind you the purpose of this forum is to get advice from people who have been there before, if they wanted to go to a doctor they would. So I would like to ask you to please stop insulting me, for following the purpose of this forum. Also if you could stop blocking all my posts (I figured out you are probably a moderator) that would be grand.

  • David have you a problem understanding ? read the above again slowly ! Do you have to insult everyone that can talk?

  • Yes you have BDD. It is like OCD, but relating to appearance concerns. You have intrusive-compulsive thoughts. I would recommend resisting them with what is called cognitive therapy, a fancy term for thinking things out rationally and finding perspectives that disempower the negative compulsive thoughts. Easier said than done, but hey ... This forum is not a "professional expert" form. This form is for people who have gotten a wrongdiagnosis from professional experts. Anyone is allowed to post on this forum, especially people who know about a disorder due to having it, or knowing someone who has it. It is a given that statements on this forum are matters of opinion, not medical advice. Half the adults posting on this forum sound illiterate, mentally impaired, or ignorant, so I don't really care about age of posters I am more concerned with if they can actually make a cogent point and not be obnoxious.

  • I am soon to be 46. Worked as a Licensed Nurse for sixteen yrs before going into private duty for four yrs. I have both school, hands on AND personal experience........... and, I'm only replying here to give KUDO's to 14yr old David. I'm very proud of you. Don't waste your time or energy batting back and forth with such people online. Simply state what you know. Stay true to yourself and let people like this one that seems so intoxicated by your age play alone.
