I am 38 years old and suffer from chronic anxiety and depression. I was examined by an internest twice because I've been plagued by feeling like I can barely catch my breath (gasping for air) and I burp excessively and uncontrollably. The internest told me to stop gasping for air--but you see I CAN'T because I have to catch my breath--it's a vicious cycle. ...And then there's my burping--burps get stuck in my throat and I also burp uncontrollably. THE INTERNEST SAYS ALL OF IT'S ANXIETY and that I need to manage my anxiety. The doctor says exercise and has changed my medicine a number of times, but nothing seems to work. I AM VERY VERY UNCOMFORTABLE and totally embarassed in social situations. Oh yeah--I also yawn constantly to try to catch my breath. DESPERATE-- PLEASE HELP.

  • you are swallowing air .what goes down must come up!my mother in law used to do it.the yawning is because you are not breathing properly due to all the swallowing.it might be worth putting your lungs under some healthy stress. give em something to do,fast walking perhaps might smooth it all out for you!ask the doc first though. if it was me and i could manage it i would try a complete change of scene,to get away from whatever is upsetting. failing that try "rational emotive therapy "by albert ellis it is an easy read and you dont have to read it all. if you cant change the outer landscape try changing the inner!

  • have you thought of going to the gastroenterologist? they could treat you for the gas that is producing the burps (due to the air you swallow) and maybe you wouldn't be able to belch?Pray about this.... the Lord can take away your anxiety and give you perfect health. Trust in the Lord and He will take care of you and heal you. Seek Him and He won't forsake you. There is nothing that He can't do. I promise! Anxiety is one of the easiest things to treat....... I used to have anxiety as well. I started reading my Bible (in the mornings before my husband or kids would get up) and it changed my life. I wasn't so irritable and became a much calmer person. I highly suggest you doing that. What do you have to lose? I will be praying for you to get well.....

  • I have experienced the same thing with the burping. I think you may have an acid reflux problem like I did. If you control the excess acid I think the burping will stop as it did for me. My gastroenterologist put me on protonix and it worked. This comes and goes in my life. I take meds if it acts up and then I go off them again eventually. It takes a week or two for the meds to kick in. Stay away from soda too as that makes it worse.

  • You have Hyperventilation Syndrome. Look it up on the net and it will give you all the details. To give you the basics you are getting TO MUCH o2. This is caused by quick shallow breaths that are generated by the fight -flight response. What you need to do is this: breath through your nose ( inhale and exhale ) and take no more than 5 breaths in one minutes time and make sure you are doing belly breathing ( place your hands on you belly and feel the rise and fall ) do this for five minutes, I guarantee you are going to feel better. ( You are filling the lower diaphram with air, getting a full breath ) If you feel you must take a deep breath do so and if you have been doing this for at least one to two minutes you will get your breath. Then go right back to the technique, you will find this works. I had the EXACT SYMPTOMS you describe. The swallowing of air is because your mouth is dry from your not breathing through your nose, so you build up saliva , swallow and take in air with that shallow breath. The next time you notice the shortness of breath place your hand on your tummy to remind you to take the full belly breaths and you will get back on course in no time. By the way some folks will say to breath in and out of a paper sack which will increase your carbon dioxide level and lower your o2 level and this will work but is a quick fix and not a long term answer. Belly breathing will SET YOU FREE !!!

Assuming that you are sitting somewhere that's comfortable and quiet, reading is calming in and of itself. You seem to attribute your calmness only to what you were reading. Second, you said you got up before your husband and kids which assures you some alone time. This is also great way to relieve stress.Telling people to pray for God to take away anxiety is complete nonsense. Then again, so is retorting, "There is nothing that He can't do." What does that even mean? There is nothing that Zeus can't do, or Thor, or Horus, or any other god... or a unicorn for that matter. Anxiety can be caused by many things. You have to know the cause to relieve the effect. In your case, you just seem to have adapted your beliefs about the world to relieve your anxiety about it. P1.) God exists. P2.) There is nothing God can't do, including taking away my anxiety if he so wants. P3.) God listens to prayers. C.) Therefore, if I have faith in God, pray to him, he will always be on MY side, watching over me, making sure I am OK. My connection to God allows me access to powers that no human possesses. I can pray to God for happiness, money, success, rain, anything. My soul is now immortal. I will live in Heaven forever.Believing this doesn't make it true. But it might help relieve your anxiety about death or the purpose of life...

You offered nothing but "complete nonsense", "complete idiot" and under this rhetoric the guise of complete understanding. But I fail to see how you have shown this? the lady was not out prove the existence of God. If the Christian God is true, then she is right (though unclear in some respects), If the Christian God is False, the she is wrong; but she is not shown to be false on account of your Dawkin-esque style philosophically bankrupt name calling. I wonder why you even responded to it; if I told you that a pink elephant underneath my bed cured me of anxiety, you would laugh, think I was crazy and move on - it is because you know it is true and you hate it, that you get angry. I am not sure what your purpose was; if 1) to vent anger, mock and provide unsubstantiated comments and rhetoric then Good Job.if 2) to carefully dissect and consider the rationale motivating the truth of Christian Theism and the effects on people united to God through *****t then you failed; furthermore; if 2) why are you wasting your time on wrong diagnosis? Your arguments are poor, but wrongdiagnosis, and a forum on wrongdiagnosis does not seem too befitting. Maybe a childrens website would be more appropriate for your depth.

  • I find I have very similar symptoms to yours. Interestingly enough, over dinner my wife and I were talking about the fact that it could be anxiety, and that the cure in God's Word for anxiety is prayer. That doesn't mean I will never go to a doctor if the symptoms persist, but I do believe the Bible and will pursue this avenue. I have seen the comments to the lady regarding how foolish she sounds. Interestingly enough, God said in His Word that the wisdom of God is foolishness to men. By name calling, you have proved another truth in the Bible. The Bible also tells the Christian they will "have trouble" in this world, and that they will be persecuted. You have proved another truth in the Bible. I really didn't need you to prove the truth of the Bible, I am already a believer, I just find it interesting that when the Christian is attacked, they can continue to find comfort in Scripture. With that said, I guess I need to bone up on my prayer skills and see what can God can do about this anxiety. By the way, did it ever cross your mind that the reason God told us to pray during our anxiety was because it does have physical benefits to us, not just spiritual? Maybe he wants us to read our Bible because their are physical benefits to that as well. How come every time a Christian does something that the Bible says, it makes them whacky, but if she would have said she was just meditating in the morning to clear her mind, she would have received praise. Imagine this, if God created us, He knows what is best for us, not just spiritually, but physically also. It is amazing that there is so little room for God in many people's minds when it comes to "science" where ideas are supposed to be expressed, explored, experimented with, and found out. No one has disproved the existence of God, scientifically or otherwise, but He has been thrown out of science like yesterday's news.

  • I am a nurse and I am also having these symptoms. I have never been told I have anxiety. These symptoms get worse as the day goes on especially after dinner or large meal. My abdomen swells, I burp a lot and feel very short of breath. I feel like the shortness of breath makes me anxious. I feel like my problem could be severe GERD or Hiatal Hernia. I can take a Pepcid AC and it seems to help some, sometime it works great sometimes it only helps some. I would suggest going to a gastroenterologist and watch what you eat very closely, following a bland diet, that is what I plan on doing.

  • I don't agree with your statement that praying to God may not help, and reading the Bible do not help. When anything dealing with emotion and mind there are many symptoms that cannot be proved scientifically. Most researchers cannot even prove for a an absolute remedy for many specific symptoms and they resort in possibility only. Even when talking about science, it just pure discovery of anything that was existed and then scientist mere create hypothesis subsequently proving the theories(For example an apple drop at Isaac Newton head coincidentally he discover the law of gravity). So there is nothing to brag about scientific facts. Do not get me wrong that I do not agree with scientific way to resolve this kind of problem. For my experience with my wife, she had this kind of burping symptom since when her father pass away. I indeed bring her for expert medical help checking for excessive burping and even done physical scan using scope inside her colon and stomach for detail diagnosis. Doctor couldn't find any fault in it.(For conclusion, I presume that scientific knowledge about this matter may not well advanced enough to resolve the problem but patient need to get heal but how to overcome it?)So I have no choice to go back to the Creator for help just by praying and reading Bible verses that help to counter the negative emotional stress. I did that with my wife and it really helps. She was healed from her burping symptom. Now I even encourage her for regular exercise and balance diet and enough sleeping hours which may help to regain her health condition. What help's her so much at the beginning state are the positive Words from Bible verses that help her to take initiative to counter her emotion. (Remember the movie, Dr Patch Adam using emotion to help patient to get heal from their sickness)My conclusion is there is none ultimate way for remedy then we need to look for alternative. You sound like a complete idiot. First of all, you didn't JUST pray. You said you started reading. • hey guys i suffer from these very same symptoms, i went emergency to the hospital and they tested me for respiratory diseases and gave me ecg and xray and found nothing, i was completely shattered but then as silly as some people may think, Prayers does help, because i prayed about it and i got better. Also i use Kalms, its a herbal drug that relieves u from stress and anxiety and it slows down your heart beat therfore pumping large volume of air to your lungs for you to have deep refreshing breaths.I took it for 2 days and it was gone, but Prayers do work and maybe if i had just used that as opposed to any other medicine i wudnt be better, trust in God :)
