Worried about my 5 month old rolling her eyes

My 5 month old started doing this crazy thing with her eyes last week and it is starting to scare me. She usually does it when she is lying on her back or in her swing. She rolls her eyes out and up and then re-focuses on whatever she is looking at. It is a quick movement. I'm not sure if she is doing it voluntarily or involuntarily. I tried to explain it to the pediatrician and of course she would not do it while we were at the office. She has been referred to a pediatric opthamologist but not until March. I am worried and wonder what in the world could be causing this and if it is something serious or not. She is otherwise very healthy (besides ear infections). She is developing normally - starting to grab everything in site and beginning to sit on her own for a few seconds. Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated!!

  • I would get something brightly colored and begin tracking her sight. Place the object up, down, far left, far right, and see if she follows the movement. Sometimes little ones do like exploring how it feels to move their eyes like the way you described. If she has no problems tracking it and her "episodes" only last a few seconds, I wouldn't be too worried. If the episodes get worse or if she seems to have balance problems, then I would get her checked out with and ENT. Has she been on antibiotics for the ear infections? This may make her prone for more. Please try to stay away from antibiotics for ear infections, most docs these days prefer a wait and see approach. Most infections (not all) clear up on their own. Homeopathic remedies are very helpful for this. And, if she was taking antibiotics, you should give her a small amount of liquid probiotics to help build back her immune system. Best wishes.DOM

  • Please get another opinion. See a neurologist. It doesn't sound like she is having any trouble with her eyes. My friend, Cherie has a daughter Kaitlyn now age 8. When Cherie was pregnant, she was carrying twins. Cherie was 3 months along in her pregnancy, and started to bleed.:( She had an ultrasound done. It showed the one baby had no heartbeat. They also found Kaitlyn had a cyst on her brain. They didn't mention this to Cherie. After everything happened and Cherie got the medical records she then found out. At 9 months, Kaitlyn started having seizures. A brain scan was done. There were days Kaitlyn had to be sedated because she was having so many seizures. The brain scan showed the the cyst was there and it was bigger. She was having anywhere from 40 to 60 seizures a day. you could see in her eyes and body movements when she had one. They put her on Tegratal and she is presently on 400mg. Kaitlyn goes weeks without seizures now. She is homeschooled and is suppose to be in 3rd grade but is doing 5th grade curriculum. Kaitlyn has a strong belief in God that one day she will be seizure free. She prayers for this daily. :)
