I have had a few experiences, where I would wake up in the middle of the night, it only happens after I wake up from sleeping. I feel funny, then i check my blood pressure with my machine and it is way elevated , sometimes up to 190/100 with rapid pulse and heart racing up to 120
heartbeats per minute. It is really scary, then sometimes it could increase
and last up to 10 or 15 minutes.sometimes I feel like my veins are on fire and tingling.
Afterwards my shoulder muscles hurt, I get sinus problems, then I feel tired, after the pulse and blood pressure start going down, and the last three times it happened my body started shaking as if I were in shock or something.

Anybody ever experience this?

  • I am a married 50 yr old female with two sons (26 and 28). I also have experienced this. Usually it occurs around 3am with no warning. I wake feeling very hot, sweaty and my heart is pounding very fast as if I was severely frightened. The best result is to throw off the covers, lay quite still, and think very boring thoughts. The first time it happened I was 28 and I got up and washed my face but ended up fainting and being found by my husband. I was then cold and clammy (shock I assume) very very tired and refused medical help and simply went back to bed. My heart rate seemed normal by then but the next day I saw my GP who immediately sent me for cardiac monitoring as he said I was tachycardic. No other symptoms were found and no cause. I took Beta Blockers for a couple of weeks and my tachycardia resolved itself. I haven't fainted since but now I stay prone when experiencing an event and I have had extensive heart tests a number of times with no result. I think in my case it could be stress and/or related to gastric reflux. I limit my liquid intake after 8pm and don't drink coffee, wine or eat chocolate after dinner. Sleeping with a slightly raised head/chest seems to help too. I haven't had a severe event now for a couple of years (may be related to menopause occuring).
