Hopefully someone can help. I'm an overall healthy 39 year old male, 6 feet 215 lbs. I work out 3-4 times a week and eat healthy. My only vice is i do drink alot of beer roughly 18-24 a week, especially during football season.
In January of 2005 I caught a flu and went to my primary Dr. and received a perscription for Z-Pac. About a week later I woke up and had a serious tingling and buzzing in both hands and feet. I also had difficulty maintaining an erection. During the next few months there were also muscle spasms and burning pain in my rt.forearm. My feet also were sore and I actually developed a slight bulge on the side of my right foot, that has since subsided. My primary Dr. ran the routine blood tests and I also saw a neurologist. He had an MRI done of the upper spinal area with nothing unusual. He also checked for large fiber neuropathy which came back normal (As I would suspect because I feel that I have small fiber problems). The blood tests showed some high liver enzyme levels but not to a level where my Dr was worried. My cholesterol and BP were also a little high but not where he thought I needed medication.
Since the onset the tingling has subsided to reappear for a few weeks then subside for a month or two. My feet are always a little sore in the morning and I do get soem joint pain now and again. Overall I have improved-the tingling is much milder the burning pain is gone. The erectile dysfunction is better it has improved at times to almost 90%, but I do have set backs where my feeling is diminished to 60-70%. These "flare ups" last three or four weeks then level off, get a little better usually. It's like riding a rollercoaster. The impotence is troubling especially at my age. Viagra helps when I need it.
Any suggestions? It's been two years now. I do feel I have a small fiber neuropathy, what the cause is I don't know. The main problem is my feet pain and the impotence-I have never been 100% with that or my feet maybe 90% but never like I was. I still get my hands going numb at night to bother me for a month or two, go away and then come back again. Is the alcohol a cause, I don't drink daily but do drink 5-6 beers a few times a week. Any help would be appreciated. I do take Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L Carnitine and Sam E for Liver support.
