Strange Swelling: feet & hands

Strange swelling on the soles of my feet. Comes and goes every few days. The swelling is any where from dime size to silver dollar and doesn’t seem to locate itself in any particular place – it can be anywhere on the sole other than bottoms of toes. They can show up on either foot and can be as many as three per foot though usually only one or two per foot and usually only in one foot at a time.

The swelling feels like it is well under the skin and like I’m stepping on a small balloon. Their onset is preceded by localized itching and happens most often in the morning after I’m up and around although the itching goes away once the swelling set in. Occasionally my hands will swell (3-4 months between) but I’ve yet to have the feet & hands occur at the same time. Occasionally I’ll get an inflammation about the size of a silver dollar on my leg next to the groin (4-5 weeks between).

I’m male, 35, 5’7” and weight about 125lbs. Always been difficult for me to put on weight and I’ve had fatigue symptoms all my life (although most people are surprised to find this out as I try & fight it everyday).

The strange swelling started with hands about 4 years ago and has only reticently progressed to feet in the last 6 months. I take Benadryl when I feel swelling coming on but can’t tell if it’s being effective or if it’s going away on it own as the swelling can last 30 minutes or hang around all day.

Thanks for any help/ direction.

  • Sounds kind of like Dyshidrotic Eczema. I'd go to a dermatologist.

  • Sounds kind of like Dyshidrotic Eczema. I'd go to a dermatologist. Thanks for the idea, however, it looks nothing like Dyshidrotic Eczema. Swelling does not manifest in that fashion and is sub-dermal making it all but impossible to see like the blistering effect of Dyshidrotic. Feels like I'm walking on a large bunched up piece of sock. Thanks again
