recurrence of adenoids

My son was operated for adenoids exactly an year back when he was 4 years old. This was done as his nasal air passage was blocked to 80% and he had difficulty in breathing through nose.

Now after exactlly one year he suddenly developed the same problem and x ray shows 90% nasal air way blokage. Last time he was operated through mouth now doctor says that he would conduct nose endoscopy and also remove the adenoids in the process.

I would appreciate if you could help me answer the followings to put my mind at rest;

1. Does the adenoids grow back i.e do they re occur.
2. Can they re occur so fast till november end he was perfectly ok and by mid Dec,06 he has the same problem and now it is so sever that while breathing at night I can feel that he puts so much of an effort to breath that his entire body shakes with every breath he takes.

3. The doctor had even put a suction in the nose to rule out any liquid accumulation. Is there no way that one can say for sure that it is the adenoids reccurence.

I'll be obliged if you could mail me your suggestions and a phone number where I can call you for your opinion.

  • Yes, adenoids can grow back, and it can happen fast or after several years. I would get a second opinion on the surgery. Does he have sleep apnea? Severe ear infections? If not, then it is possible that he will outgrow this problem as he gets older...Also, has he been tested for allergies? Dairy can cause excessive mucus production and block the nasal passages. Try eliminating all dairy products for 1-2 months and see if there is improvement. I don't know your whole situation, but if he doesn't have severe sleep apnea or hearing loss do to recurrent ear infections, then I would have a wait and see attitude before subjecting him to more surgery.Hope this helps and best of luck to you.Doctor of Oriental Medicine

  • He does not have ear infection but we observed that feels sleepy during the day and snores a lot while asleep. He feels thirsty and asks for water even in cold winter nights as he breaths from mouth. We took a second opinion and were adviced surgery whereas the doctor who operated him last sugget a wait and watch. According to him adenoids might shrink but we feel that if they grow larger than earlier within a period of 4-6 months how can they shrink now.

  • Have them take a soft tissue lateral x-ray. They will be able to see the Adnoids and you will be able to make a more educated decision. Good Luck

  • Yes, I would love to know if you decided to do it again. My son too had adenoids removed one year ago. He was not snoring and now suddenly he snores again:( I am worried that these might be adenoids!This would be so bad as the first surgery was not so good: he could not turn his neck for about 2 weeks:(

  • My son just had a THIRD adenoid revision. Yep, you read that correctly. The first time they returned in just a few months. This time he was last scoped in December everything looked fine. By February he was snoring again and by April did horribly on his sleep study which showed obstruction. I really hope this is it. I know this is an old thread but decided to post for future visitors wondering the same.

  • My now 3 year old had his tonsils removed and his adenoids cauterized on June 10, 2015. He started an snoring again a few months ago and is now displaying sleep apnea symptoms. I was told that they couldn't grow back this fast. I'm going to have a second opinion.
