my name is tanya and i am 18 years old i am currently 23 weeks pregnant and have had many numerous examinatons to find the problem with my baby, i was told many differrnt things but after all the tears we have now found out that she has a rare chromosome 3 disorder that means she has an extra chromosome on the third chromosome, i do not know what this means for my babys life as no one has come across this not even my consultant at the hospital so he is just giving me his thoughts on this and thinks termination is the right thing to do but why should i when he dosent even know what this disorder means for my baby.

  • HiI am very sorry to hear about what is happening.Sadly having an extra copy of a chromosome is very serious. You will have heard about Downs children. Well they have an extra copy of chromosome 21. This is a very small chromosome only 46,976,537 long. The extra copies make lots of extra proteins and this is one of the reasons for the children not being "normal" The smaller the chromosome the less problems there are. So babies that have an extra copy of the small chromosome 21 survive. The next commonest is an extra copy of chromosome 13 which is 114,151,656 long. The babies who have this are profoundly affected and are very ill and usually do not survive very long after birth.Chromosome 3 is 199,411,731 long and as it is even bigger, will probably affect your baby even more. This is perhaps why the doctor is suggesting termination. My heart goes out to you because as you say, they do not know. It is so very rare and so unknown.I am sorry I can not tell you better news.
