I am a practicing psychiatrist with a 10 year background in internal medicine.About June of 2006 I developed symptoms of rather rapid pain and stiffness in the small joints of my hands that spread to the other joints both sides with special involvment of the shoulders. At the same time I was strugglling with a sciatica pain on the right side with some faciculation and observable difference in the size of my calf. The sciatica syndrome was only diagnosed after I insisted on an MRI scan since the X-rays were negative. The MRI revealed that I had a cyst from the facet joint pinching L5.This was taken care of 100%by neurosurgery that I opted for.The Rheumatologist that I saw had to be directed to this by me since he was looking at all the symptoms and based on the blood work(HLa27,ESR,CRp etc.,)He believed in "Clumping"than "Splitting" the twe.His diagnosis was that I had Spodyloarthropathy of Unknown etiolgy or it could be a reactive to unknown infection.NSAIDs were not effective. He recommended PT and asked me for a return visit. He was considering other medications.
However on my own hunch and some research on the net I started myself on Prednisone 10 mg BID and found complete relief of the symptoms.I have come to conclude that I have Polymyalgia Rheumatica and I plan to continue the Prednisone as indicated for this condition and use exercise, diet and deal with the possible side effects of treatment on my own.I will monitor my ESR and CBC.
Hope my story gives some insight to others.
