Please Help... Undiagnosed Severe Back Pain

Let me start off by telling you a bit about me. I am 23 years old. I used to be very active and went to the gym 3-4 days per week, and horseback rode competatively, training 5-6 days per week. Currently, I am 235lbs, and 5'6". This is the heaviest i've been. For 7 years I have been suffering from severe chronic back pain, and nobody seems to know why. My doctor is calling it degenerative disc disease, but he admits that he really doesn't know what's causing the pain.

I've had an MRI, CT, X-rays, and have been seen by 2 orthopaedic specialists. I have had 3 epidural spinal injections of some sort of sterroid to try relieve the pain, but they haven't made any change in my condition.

I cannot hold a job. I cannot ride my horse anymore. I cannot go to the gym anymore. I have to have my boyfriend help me out of bed in the morning, and help me out of the bath tub. I can't pick things up off the floor, and I can't lift anything over 1lb. I am 23 YEARS OLD! I am in so much pain that I'm going crazy and I don't know what to do. It is so frustrating for them to do test after test and come up with nothing!

A pain clinic prescribed amitriptyline for the depression, as well as it showing some promise in helping other people suffering from chronic pain. I'm also on oxycodone for breakthrough pain, and a long-acting morphine every 12 hours to manage the pain. It doesn't take it away though, and i'm watching my life pass me by.

If anybody can offer any advice, I would really appreciate it. I don't know what else to do, or where else to go. I'm grasping at straws at this point...

Thank you in advance to anyone who responds.

  • HiWhen I was your age I too had very bad back problems.I spent two weeks unable to move, just lying in bed because that was what my doctor told me to do.In the end my mum took me to an osteopath. I was carried into the osteopaths and I walked out.Western medicine cant do a lot for back aches so tryan osteopath or a chiropracter or even one of thoseD.O.M.sGood luck

  • Osteopaths are specially trained in bone problems. An osteopath should be able to tell by sight and touch whether the bones of your spine are properly alined and whether there are any cartilidge disc problems.I had a partially slipped disc and the osteopath was able to crick my back in such a way that it popped back in. Took two goes BTW.
