This started about 10 weeks ago. For the first 6 weeks I had a very tight throat like I was being choked all the time, along with a stiff and tense right side of the neck. Then I began having chest pressure in addition to the other symptoms. This continued for another 3 weeks before I started also getting pressure in the shoulders and arms about a week ago. I have been to the Drs and they gave me X-Rays, EKG and said it was fine. They came down to two conclusions, it was GERD or Anxiety. Gave me meds for both and sent me on my way. I cam out with some Hydroxyzine HCL 50mg for anxiety (take as needed) and some Protonix 40mg twice daily. I have taken the anxiety meds with absolutely no help. The Protonix may or may not help since I just switched to them from Prilosec OTC. Do these symptoms sound like GERD to anyone? I'm pretty sure it's not anxiety since this happens whether I am stressed or not - plus the meds don't help me. This has greatly reduced my quality of life and noone understands how disabling this can be. Please help me....

  • First, understand that anxiety is not always synonymous with stress. A person can only deal with 6 known stresses at a time. These can be good things also, like a new home, new job, new love interest..all stresses. Personally, to rule out either, I would try one medication at a time and give it time to react. If it is anxiety, a change of circumstances would also relieve the symptoms. Perhaps one of your living conditions, unknowlingly is causing physical symptoms. I went through a period where I had trouble breathing, and often felt like someone was sitting on my chest, a heavy feeling in my chest, back and shoulders. I had an intelligent doctor ask me about a personal situation, and as I described it, (jokingly) the symptoms became apparently similar to my medical condition. The doctor just smiled, and I took steps to change the situation.
