I am a 19 year old healthy female with no known medical conditions. There is no known history of heart disease or heart attacks in the family although my grandmother (mid 70s) occasionally suffers from angina. For about 5 years i have been experiencing a mild discomfort to the left side of my chest which is worse when i am stressed or worried and before and after eating. Sometimes the pain is relieved by belching. When i was 14 i went to see my GP about it and my heart rate and breathing was measured and i was told everything was normal. My GP told me the problem was probably indigestion and heartburn caused by stress. She prescribed me with Gaviscon which i took for 2 days and the symptoms disappeared for about a year. However the pain returned at around 16 and has come and gone ever since. Usually i will have the discomfort for a couple of days and it will then go away for a week or so before returning. I think the problem is probably due to acid reflux but sometimes the pain is more of an ache rather than a burning sensation. It was also suggested that the pain could be due to my sleeping habits as i sleep on my side with my chest crushed and my shoulders and arms tense. The pain does not prevent me from carrying out my day to day activities or excersize, it is not severe and does not give me any difficulty in breathing. However whenever i try to look it up i end up more worried and before as the results always suggest heart conditions. I am considering going back to see my GP but i am afraid. I am a student and cannot afford to have lots of tests and examinations only to discover the problem is only heartburn. Does anyone else have these symptoms?
